The Geographic North Pole (Live) - Laurie Anderson[00:00:00]
The summer of 1974 was brutally hot in New York[00:00:09]
And I kept thinking about how nice and icy it[00:00:15]
Must be at the North Pole And then I though [00:00:17]
“Wait a second why not go ”[00:00:22]
You know like in cartoons where[00:00:25]
They hang going to[00:00:26]
The North Pole on their door knobs[00:00:27]
And they just take off [00:00:29]
So I spent a couple of weeks preparing for the trip [00:00:32]
Getting a hatchet a huge backpack maps [00:00:35]
Knives sleeping bags [00:00:39]
Lures and a three month supply of Banic [00:00:41]
A versatile high-protein paste that can be[00:00:44]
Made into flat bread biscuits or cereal [00:00:47]
Now I had decided to hitch hike and one day I just[00:00:53]
Walked out onto Austin Street [00:00:58]
Weighing down seventy pounds of gear [00:01:00]
And stuck out my thumb [00:01:03]
Going North I asked the driver[00:01:08]
As I struggled into a station wagon [00:01:11]
After I got out of New York [00:01:15]
Most of the rides were trucks[00:01:18]
Until I reached the Hudson Bay and began[00:01:20]
To hitch in small mail planes [00:01:22]
The pilots were usually guys who'd[00:01:26]
Gone to Canada to[00:01:29]
Avoid the draft or else embittered Vietnam vets[00:01:30]
Who never wanted to go home again [00:01:36]
Either way they always wanted to show[00:01:40]
Off a few of their stunts [00:01:43]
We'd go swooping along the rivers doing[00:01:46]
Loop do loops and baby [00:01:49]
And they'd drop me off at an airstrip [00:01:54]
“There'll be another plane by here couple[00:01:57]
Of weeks; see ya; good luck ”[00:01:58]
I never did make it all the way to the geographic pole;[00:02:06]
It turned out to be a restricted area and no[00:02:10]
One was allowed to fly in or even over it [00:02:14]
I did get within a few miles of the[00:02:20]
Magnetic pole though [00:02:22]
So it wasn't really that disappointing [00:02:24]
I entertained myself in the evenings [00:02:28]
Cooking or smoking [00:02:31]
And watching the blazing light of[00:02:34]
The huge Canadian[00:02:37]
Sunsets as they turned the lake into fire [00:02:38]
Later I lay on by back looking up[00:02:46]
At the Northern lights[00:02:49]
And imagining there'd been[00:02:51]
A nuclear holocaust and[00:02:52]
That I was the only human being left in all of[00:02:54]
North America and what would I do then [00:02:56]
And then when these lights went out [00:03:02]
I stretched out on[00:03:06]
The ground watching the stars as[00:03:07]
They turned around[00:03:12]
And their enormous silent[00:03:14]
I finally decided to turn back because of my hatchet [00:03:26]
I'd been chopping some wood and the hatchet flew[00:03:30]
Out of my hand on the upswing [00:03:33]
And I did what you should never do[00:03:36]
When this happens:[00:03:38]
I looked up to see where it had gone[00:03:40]
And it came down[00:03:45]
Fffooo just missing my head and I thought [00:03:47]
My God I could be working around[00:03:52]
Here with a hatchet[00:03:55]
Emme in my skull and I'm ten miles[00:03:56]
From the airstrip [00:04:00]
And nobody in the whole world[00:04:02]
Knows where I am [00:04:05]
Daddy Daddy it was just like you said[00:04:20]
Now that the living outnumber the dead[00:04:31]
Where I come from it's a long thin thread[00:04:42]
Across an ocean Down a river of red[00:04:51]
Now that the living outnumber the dead[00:05:01]
Speak my language[00:05:12]
