Odd Job Man - Harry Chapin[00:00:01]
I give part time help[00:00:08]
I'm the odd job man[00:00:10]
I can't do what I want[00:00:12]
So I do what I can[00:00:14]
And I'll tell you now[00:00:16]
So that you will understand[00:00:18]
You get just what you pay for from the odd job man[00:00:21]
One day this dude drives in the station[00:00:35]
And I slide out to the pump[00:00:37]
And he says " I need some odd jobs done[00:00:40]
Can you get off from this dump "[00:00:42]
Well I can always use some extra bread[00:00:44]
So I nod and take the job[00:00:46]
When he says " Clean up before you come[00:00:49]
I do not hire slobs "[00:00:51]
Now you can see I'm not no fancy pants[00:00:54]
But everyone has pride[00:00:56]
And especially since this lovely lady's[00:00:58]
Sittin' by his side[00:01:00]
Still something keeps my trap shut[00:01:03]
And I nod again " Alright "[00:01:05]
And he gooses his Mercedes[00:01:08]
And he squeals off in the night[00:01:10]
I give part time help[00:01:14]
I'm the odd job man[00:01:16]
I can't do what I want[00:01:19]
So I do what I can[00:01:21]
And I'll tell you now[00:01:24]
So that you will understand[00:01:26]
You get just what you pay for from the odd job man[00:01:28]
Well I find his place next morning[00:01:36]
It's more a palace than a pad[00:01:38]
And it kind of makes my pick-up truck[00:01:41]
Start looking pretty bad[00:01:43]
But the same lady swings the door back[00:01:45]
And before one word is said[00:01:48]
She leads me to his trophy room[00:01:50]
Where he sits with his stuffed heads[00:01:52]
He's got this list of jobs for me to do[00:01:55]
While he's out of town[00:01:58]
And he says "I'm too damn busy boy[00:01:59]
The way I move around"[00:02:03]
Well I start to figure prices when he says[00:02:03]
"It's time you learned [00:02:07]
When you're dealing with a gentleman[00:02:09]
You get just what you earn"[00:02:11]
I give part time help[00:02:16]
I'm the odd job man[00:02:18]
I can't do what I want[00:02:21]
So I do what I can[00:02:23]
And I'll tell you now[00:02:25]
So that you will understand[00:02:27]
You get just what you pay for from the odd job man[00:02:30]
I set to work that weekend[00:02:55]
And I'm fixin' up some stairs[00:02:57]
When I feel that someone's watching me[00:03:00]
And I see SHE'S standing there[00:03:01]
And she says "I like to watch you work[00:03:04]
You have such supple hands"[00:03:07]
She says "Can I help you " and I say[00:03:09]
"Baby you CAN "[00:03:13]
Well she looks me in the eyes boys[00:03:15]
I admit I looked a little lower[00:03:17]
That's when she starts breathing faster[00:03:19]
And I start working slower[00:03:21]
You see when you have a helper[00:03:23]
With her attitude and grace[00:03:25]
You start puttin' lots of extra hours[00:03:29]
Workin' 'round the place[00:03:32]
I give part time help[00:03:35]
I'm the odd job man[00:03:37]
I can't do what I want[00:03:39]
So I do what I can[00:03:42]
Well a month had too soon come and gone[00:03:52]
With my odd jobs all done[00:03:54]
When who should pull up to the pump[00:03:57]
But the long-lost prodigal son[00:03:58]
And he says "Here's a hundred dollars boy"[00:04:03]
Pulls the bill off from his wad[00:04:06]
And he starts to hand it over[00:04:08]
Like a gift come straight from God [00:04:10]
I say "That's just a buck an hour sir "[00:04:13]
He says "That's what I pay for jerks"[00:04:16]
Now I admit that almost blew my cool[00:04:20]
But I staggered back to work[00:04:21]
You see most times when it's said and done[00:04:25]
There's justice to this life[00:04:27]
'Cause what that man had done to me[00:04:30]
I'd done to his wife [00:04:32]
I give part time help[00:04:36]
I'm the odd job man[00:04:39]
I can't do what I want[00:04:43]
So I do what I can[00:04:45]
And I'll tell you now[00:04:48]
So that you will understand[00:04:51]
You get just what you pay for from the odd job man[00:04:54]
