The Salesman (Live) - Laurie Anderson[00:00:00]
Now the book is called Stories from the Nerve Bible[00:00:05]
And what I mean by the Nerve Bible is the body [00:00:09]
And parts of the body appear and disappear[00:00:15]
Throughout the book adding up to a kind of[00:00:17]
Self-portrait although not a very naturalistic one [00:00:21]
And I used the word Bible in the title of this book[00:00:25]
Because the first really strange stories[00:00:30]
I remember hearing were Bible stories [00:00:32]
And these stories were completely amazing:[00:00:36]
About parting oceans and talking snakes [00:00:40]
And people really seemed to believe these stories [00:00:45]
And I'm talking about adults [00:00:49]
Adults who mainly just did the most mundane[00:00:53]
Things imaginable: mowing their lawns[00:00:56]
And throwing potluck parties;[00:01:00]
They all believed in these wild stories [00:01:03]
And they would sit around and discuss[00:01:07]
Them in the most matter-of-fact way [00:01:09]
So in a way I was introduced to a special local[00:01:13]
Form of surrealism at an early age and so[00:01:16]
There was always a question in my mind about[00:01:22]
What's actually true and what is just another art form [00:01:25]
Now I've always been intere [00:01:34]
Sted in trying to define what makes up the late[00:01:35]
Twentieth century American[00:01:38]
For example and so as an artist [00:01:40]
I've always thought my main job was to be a spy [00:01:44]
To use my eyes and ears [00:01:51]
And find some of the answers [00:01:54]
For example I like to hang[00:01:58]
Around the banks of[00:02:00]
Phones in airports one of my favorite listening posts[00:02:01]
And eavesdrop on conversations [00:02:06]
Now I usually travel on the[00:02:09]
Same schedule as salesmen[00:02:11]
And after lunch these guys call into the main office[00:02:13]
And I just stand there at the phones listening in[00:02:18]
And taking notes for my portrait of the Am[00:02:23]
Oh Frank Listen Frank You know [00:02:31]
I hate to say this about Brad [00:02:39]
I mean we both know he's got a heck of a job [00:02:43]
Ya ya Oh you're so right [00:02:46]
But you know we both know that Brad[00:02:51]
Isn't pulling his weight [00:02:54]
You know what I mean And I'm not saying this[00:02:57]
Just because we're both up for the[00:03:00]
Same Safeway account [00:03:02]
So this book is really a collection[00:03:07]
Of voices and stories[00:03:09]
As well as portraits of people[00:03:12]
That I've met along the way[00:03:15]
