Stepping down the ancient stones washed with dawn[00:01:16]

And entered the basilica that bore his name[00:01:21]

Seeing his effigy I bowed my head[00:01:26]

And my racing heart I gave to him I kneeled and prayed[00:01:32]

And the sleep that I could not find in the night[00:01:46]

I found through him[00:01:51]

I saw before me the world of his world[00:01:58]

The bright fields the birds in abundance[00:02:03]

All of nature of which he sang[00:02:08]

Singing of him[00:02:12]

All the beauty that surrounded him as he walked[00:02:16]

His nature that was nature itself[00:02:20]

And I heard him - I heard him speak[00:02:24]

And the birds sang sweetly[00:02:29]

And the wolves licked his feet [00:02:32]

But I could not give myself to him[00:02:36]

I felt another call from the basilica itself[00:02:40]

The call of art - the call of man[00:02:45]

And the beauty of the material drew me away[00:02:49]

And I awoke and beheld upon the wall[00:02:53]

The dream of Constantine[00:02:57]

The handiwork of Piero della Francesca[00:03:02]

Who had stood where I stood[00:03:07]

With his brush stroked The Legend of the True Cross[00:03:11]

He envisioned Constantine advancing to greet the enemy[00:03:20]

But as he was passing the river[00:03:26]

An unaccustomed fear gripped his bowels[00:03:29]

An anticipation so overwhelming that it manifested in waves[00:03:32]

All through the night a dream drew toward him[00:03:43]

As an advancing Crusade[00:03:53]

He slept in his tent on the battlefield[00:03:54]

While his men stood guard[00:03:59]

And an angel awoke him[00:04:02]

Constantine within his dream awoke[00:04:07]

And his men saw a light pass over the face of the King[00:04:11]

The troubled King[00:04:16]

And the angel came and showed to him[00:04:19]

The sign of the true cross in heaven[00:04:22]

And upon it was written[00:04:27]

In this sign shall thou conquer[00:04:30]

In the distance the tents of his army were lit by moonlight[00:04:32]

But another kind of radiance lit the face of Constantine[00:04:39]

And in the morning light[00:04:44]

The artist seeing his work was done[00:04:47]

Saw that it was good[00:04:52]

In this sign shall thou conquer[00:04:56]

He let his brush drop and passed into a sleep of his own[00:05:12]

And he dreamed of Constantine carrying into battle in his right hand[00:05:17]

An immaculate undefiled single white Cross[00:05:22]

Piero della Francesca as his brush stroked the wall[00:05:29]

Was filled with a torpor[00:05:34]

And fell into a dream of his own[00:05:39]

From the geometry of his heart he mapped it out[00:05:46]

He saw the King rise fitted with armor[00:05:51]

Set upon a white horse[00:05:56]

An immaculate cross in his right hand [00:05:56]

He advanced toward the enemy[00:06:01]

And the symmetry the perfection of his mathematics[00:06:04]

Caused the scattering of the enemy[00:06:08]

Agitated broken they fled[00:06:11]

And Piero della Francesca waking cried out[00:06:15]

All is art - all is future [00:06:22]

Oh Lord let me die on the back of adventure[00:06:27]

With a brush and an eye full of light[00:06:32]

But as he advanced in age[00:06:38]

The light was shorn from his eyes[00:06:41]

And blinded he laid upon his bed[00:06:44]

On an October morning 1492 and whispered[00:06:47]

And witnessed beauty unspoiled[00:08:01]

All the delights given by God[00:08:06]

As if an Eden itself as if Eden had opened her heart to him[00:08:10]

And opened her dress[00:08:17]

And all of her fruit gave to him[00:08:20]

And Columbus so overwhelmed[00:08:27]

Fell into a sleep of his own[00:08:31]

All the world in his sleep[00:08:36]

All of the beauty all of the beauty entwined with the future[00:08:40]

The twenty-first century[00:08:47]

Advancing like the angel[00:08:49]

To Constantine[00:08:55]

Constantine in his dream[00:08:56]
