Ludlow Massacre - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
It was early springtime when the strike was on [00:00:04]
They drove us miners out of doors [00:00:09]
Out from the houses that the Company owned [00:00:12]
We moved into tents up at old Ludlow [00:00:16]
I was worried bad about my children [00:00:23]
Soldiers guarding the railroad bridge [00:00:27]
Every once in a while a bullet would fly [00:00:31]
Kick up gravel under my feet [00:00:36]
We were so afraid you would kill our children [00:00:40]
We dug us a cave that was seven foot deep [00:00:45]
Carried our young ones and pregnant women[00:00:48]
Down inside the cave to sleep [00:00:53]
That very night your soldiers waited [00:00:59]
Until all us miners were asleep [00:01:03]
You snuck around our little tent town [00:01:06]
Soaked our tents with your kerosene [00:01:10]
You struck a match and in the blaze that started [00:01:15]
You pulled the triggers of your gatling guns [00:01:19]
I made a run for the children but the fire wall stopped me [00:01:23]
Thirteen children died from your guns [00:01:29]
I carried my blanket to a wire fence corner [00:01:34]
Watched the fire till the blaze died down [00:01:38]
I helped some people drag their belongings [00:01:42]
While your bullets killed us all around [00:01:46]
I never will forget the look on the faces[00:01:51]
Of the men and women that awful day [00:01:55]
When we stood around to preach their funerals [00:02:00]
And lay the corpses of the dead away [00:02:04]
We told the Colorado Governor to call the President [00:02:09]
Tell him to call off his National Guard [00:02:15]
But the National Guard belonged to the Governor [00:02:20]
So he didn't try so very hard [00:02:24]
Our women from Trinidad they hauled some potatoes [00:02:29]
Up to Walsenburg in a little cart [00:02:34]
They sold their potatoes and brought some guns back [00:02:37]
And they put a gun in every hand [00:02:42]
The state soldiers jumped us in a wire fence corners [00:02:48]
They did not know we had these guns [00:02:53]
And the Red-neck Miners mowed down these troopers [00:02:57]
You should have seen those poor boys run [00:03:01]
We took some cement and walled that cave up [00:03:07]
Where you killed these thirteen children inside [00:03:11]
I said "God bless the Mine Workers' Union "[00:03:16]
And then I hung my head and cried[00:03:22]
