Heading out for the east coast[00:00:05]
Lord knows i've paid some dues gettin' through,[00:00:06]
Tangled up in blue.[00:00:12]
She was married when we first met[00:00:23]
Soon to be divorced[00:00:27]
I helped her out of a jam, i guess,[00:00:28]
But i used a little too much force.[00:00:31]
We drove that car as far as we could[00:00:33]
Abandoned it out west[00:00:35]
Split up on a dark sad night[00:00:39]
Both agreeing it was best.[00:00:41]
She turned around to look at me[00:00:43]
As i was walkin' away[00:00:45]
I heard her say over my shoulder,[00:00:48]
We'll meet again some day on the avenue[00:00:50]
Tangled up in blue[00:00:55]
I had a job in the great north woods[00:01:06]
Working as a cook for a spell[00:01:08]
But i never did like it all that much[00:01:11]
And one day the ax just fell.[00:01:13]
So i drifted down to new orleans[00:01:15]
Where i was lucky just to be employed[00:01:18]
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat[00:01:20]
Right outside of delacroix.[00:01:23]
But all the while i was alone[00:01:26]
The past was close behind,[00:01:27]
I seen a lot of women[00:01:30]
But she never escaped my mind, and i just grew[00:01:33]
Tangled up in blue.[00:01:37]
She was workin' in a topless place[00:01:48]
And i stopped in for a beer,[00:01:51]
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face[00:01:53]
In the spotlight so clear.[00:01:56]
And later on as the crowd thinned out[00:01:58]
I's just about to do the same,[00:02:01]
She was standing there in back of my chair[00:02:03]
Said to me, don't i know your name? I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,[00:02:05]
She studied the lines on my face.[00:02:10]
I must admit i felt a little uneasy[00:02:13]
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,[00:02:15]
Tangled up in blue.[00:02:20]
She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe[00:02:31]
\i thought you'd never say hello,\ she said[00:02:36]
\you look like the silent type.\Then she opened up a book of poems[00:02:38]
And handed it to me[00:02:43]
Written by an italian poet[00:02:45]
From the thirteenth century.[00:02:47]
And every one of them words rang true[00:02:50]
And glowed like burnin' coal[00:02:53]
Pourin' off of every page[00:02:54]
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,[00:02:56]
Tangled up in blue.[00:03:01]
I lived with them on montague street[00:03:14]
In a basement down the stairs,[00:03:15]
There was music in the cafes at night[00:03:16]
And revolution in the air.[00:03:19]
Then he started into dealing with slaves[00:03:21]
And something inside of him died.[00:03:24]
She had to sell everything she owned[00:03:27]
And froze up inside.[00:03:29]
And when finally the bottom fell out[00:03:32]
I became withdrawn,[00:03:35]
The only thing i knew how to do[00:03:37]
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,[00:03:40]
Tangled up in blue.[00:03:42]
So now i'm goin' back again,[00:03:53]
I got to get to her somehow.[00:03:55]
All the people we used to know[00:03:58]
They're an illusion to me now.[00:04:00]
Some are mathematicians[00:04:03]
Some are carpenter's wives.[00:04:04]
Don't know how it all got started,[00:04:07]
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.[00:04:09]
But me, i'm still on the road[00:04:11]
Headin' for another joint[00:04:13]
We always did feel the same,[00:04:14]
We just saw it from a different point of view,[00:04:18]
Tangled up in blue.[00:04:23]
