A boy heard the voice of[00:00:00]

The whippoorwill one night[00:00:01]

And went out to find where he was singing[00:00:03]

He had to walk quite a ways through a big field[00:00:06]

Because the song of the whippoorwill[00:00:08]

Carried so well in the wind[00:00:09]

He sounded much closer then he really was[00:00:11]

And on the way the boy found a well worn trail[00:00:14]

So he stayed on it for a while[00:00:18]

And sitting in the middle of the trail was coyote[00:00:21]

And coyote was singing too[00:00:24]

He turned and saw the boy and he said[00:00:27]

"Why are you following me "[00:00:28]

The boy was frightened and said[00:00:31]

"Well the trail you made happened to be a short[00:00:32]

And easy way through this field [00:00:35]

Then coyote asked "Well if you're not following me[00:00:37]

Then why are you here "[00:00:40]

"Well I heard the beautiful song of the whippoorwill[00:00:42]

And wanted to watch him sing"[00:00:45]

"Well do you not think my songs are beautiful " [00:00:48]

Said coyote[00:00:50]

"Oh" said the boy [00:00:52]

"They're good but I hear you all the time[00:00:53]

I much prefer the songs of the whippoorwill"[00:00:56]

This made coyote furious and[00:00:59]

He was jealous of the whippoorwill's song[00:01:00]

He said "Listen to my night song[00:01:03]

You might like this one"[00:01:05]

And he pulled back his head[00:01:07]

And yodeled out a tune[00:01:09]

The boy covered his ears and politely said[00:01:12]

"Thank you for the song[00:01:14]

But I must be going now"[00:01:16]

"Well" coyote said[00:01:19]

"I can show you a short cut to the whippoorwill boy[00:01:21]

And where he sings is just over there"[00:01:24]

Pointing his claw [00:01:26]

Smiling out of the side of his mouth[00:01:27]

The boy paused looked around[00:01:30]

He knew the night was passing fast[00:01:33]

So he agreed to follow coyote[00:01:34]

But coyote's trail was rough and rocky[00:01:37]

And the boy fell in quite[00:01:41]

A few gopher holes along the way[00:01:42]

Coyote turned around and laughed[00:01:45]

And he yelled to the boy [00:01:47]

"We're almost there hurry up"[00:01:48]

Coyote was at a full trot but the boy[00:01:50]

Had just fallen again and hurt his knee[00:01:52]

And by the time he got to the place[00:01:55]

Where the whippoorwill had been singing all night[00:01:57]

It was morning [00:02:00]

Whippoorwill was gone and so was coyote[00:02:03]

In fact he could hear coyote's songs in another field[00:02:07]

So the boy turned and headed for home[00:02:12]

Covered with burns [00:02:16]

Mosquito bites and a skinned up knee[00:02:17]

And it was many summers later[00:02:22]

When the boy became a wiser man[00:02:23]

And he realized there are no shortcuts[00:02:26]

To find something you really love[00:02:28]

But there are many trails in this life[00:02:32]

So you must stay true to your path[00:02:35]

And always keep and eye out for coyote[00:02:39]
