The Story of the First Christmas(1959 Version)

The Story of the First Christmas - Perry Como[00:00:03]

This is Perry Como[00:00:30]

And I'd like to tell you the most wonderful [00:00:31]

The most beautiful [00:00:33]

The most exciting story in the whole world [00:00:35]

The Story of the First Christmas [00:00:39]

Now suppose you make believe[00:00:44]

This is many many years ago [00:00:45]

A long time before you were born [00:00:47]

You're standing on a hillside [00:00:50]

Near a little town in Palestine [00:00:51]

Do you see the man in the distance [00:00:55]

Walking slowly leading a donkey [00:00:56]

His name is Joseph [00:01:00]

Someone is sitting on the back of the donkey [00:01:03]

And her name is Mary [00:01:06]

They've come a long long way [00:01:09]

And they're heading for a little town near the hillside [00:01:11]

On which we're standing [00:01:14]

Something very special will happen[00:01:16]

In this little town tonight [00:01:19]

For this is the little town of Bethlehem [00:01:21]

Oh little town of Bethlehem [00:01:32]

How still we see thee lie [00:01:39]

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep [00:01:45]

The silent stars go by [00:01:51]

Yet in thy dark streets shineth [00:01:59]

The everlasting light [00:02:05]

The hopes and fears of all the years [00:02:11]

Are met in thee tonight [00:02:18]

Let's follow Joseph and Mary[00:02:32]

Into the town of Bethlehem [00:02:34]

It's getting dark and all of[00:02:37]

The rooms at the Inn are taken [00:02:38]

But the kindly Innkeeper tells them[00:02:40]

They could spend the night at a stable nearby [00:02:42]

Now I told you something was gonna happen [00:02:46]

And it did [00:02:49]

A baby boy is born to Mary and Joseph [00:02:50]

Whom they call Jesus [00:02:53]

They have no baby's crib [00:02:56]

So Mary puts little Jesus to sleep [00:02:57]

In the soft sweet hay of a manger [00:03:00]

Come come come to the manger [00:03:04]

Children sing and asleep on the hay [00:03:08]

Sing sing chorus of Angels [00:03:13]

Little Lord Jesus is born on this day [00:03:19]

Jesus is asleep in the manger [00:03:30]

So let's tiptoe out to the hillside near Bethlehem [00:03:32]

Where the Shepherds are tending their flock [00:03:35]

All at once the Shepherds are frightened [00:03:39]

You'd be frightened too [00:03:41]

Because a great light suddenly shines in the sky [00:03:42]

Even the animals are hushed and still [00:03:50]

But then you hear the voice of an Angel of the Lord [00:03:53]

And you're no longer frightened [00:04:02]

For the Angel brings good news [00:04:04]

News of a Saviour born this day [00:04:06]

News of Christ the Lord [00:04:09]

The First Noel the Angels did say [00:04:15]

Was to certain poor Shepherds [00:04:22]

In fields as they lay in fields where they [00:04:27]

Lay keeping their sheep [00:04:33]

On a cold winter's night that was so deep [00:04:37]

Noel Noel Noel Noel [00:04:45]

Born is the King of Israel [00:04:54]

Well we're still with the Shepherds [00:05:09]

On the hillside near Bethlehem [00:05:10]

We hear the Shepherds ask the Angel [00:05:13]

Where to find the Christ-child [00:05:15]

And the Angel tells them to go to the manger [00:05:17]

And as they leave the sky is filled with[00:05:22]

Other Angels singing [00:05:23]

Glory to God And on Earth Peace Goodwill to Men [00:05:25]

The Shepherds hurry to the manger [00:05:39]

Fall on their knees before the baby [00:05:41]

And they worship him [00:05:43]

For He is Christ the Lord [00:05:45]

Oh Come all ye faithful [00:05:51]

Joyful and triumphant [00:05:57]

Oh Come ye Oh Come ye to Bethlehem [00:06:03]

Come and behold Him [00:06:16]

Born the King of Angels [00:06:21]

Oh Come let us adore Him [00:06:27]

Oh Come let us adore Him [00:06:34]

Oh Come let us adore Him [00:06:42]

Christ the Lord [00:06:50]

And now look up into the sky [00:07:04]

Do you see that bright star[00:07:05]

Twinkling in the heavens [00:07:06]

Far away three men are looking at[00:07:09]

That star just as we are [00:07:10]

They're riding on camels [00:07:13]

And they're using the star as a guide[00:07:15]

To lead them to the Christ-child [00:07:17]

Who are these three men who follow the star [00:07:21]

We Three Kings of Orient are [00:07:26]

Bearing gifts we traverse afar [00:07:30]

Field and fountain moor and mountain [00:07:34]

Following yonder star [00:07:41]

Yes the three men on the camels[00:07:50]

Are the three wise men [00:07:52]

The new star guides them straight to Bethlehem [00:07:54]

To a little baby lying in a manger [00:07:56]

There the three wise men present[00:08:00]

Gifts to the Christ-child [00:08:01]

The first Christmas gifts ever given to anyone [00:08:04]

A gift of gold of frankincense and of Mir [00:08:08]

And they too fall on their knees to worship Him [00:08:16]

And now a great peace settles on the night [00:08:19]

For it is the Holy Night [00:08:23]

Silent night holy night [00:08:27]

All is calm all is bright [00:08:37]

Round yon virgin mother and child [00:08:48]

Holy infant so tender and mild [00:08:57]

Sleep in heavenly peace [00:09:07]

Sleep in heavenly peace [00:09:17]

This is why when we celebrate Christmas [00:09:29]

We think of Bethlehem [00:09:31]

We think of the Virgin Mary [00:09:33]

We think of the three wise men [00:09:36]

And the birth of the Christ-child [00:09:38]

The First Christmas [00:09:41]

Oh Come let us adore Him [00:09:43]

Christ the Lord[00:09:51]
