Fancy - Midday Sun[00:00:00]
I remember it all very well lookin' back[00:00:10]
It was the summer i turned eighteen[00:00:12]
We lived in a one room rundown shack[00:00:15]
On the outskirts of new orleans[00:00:17]
We didn't have money for food or rent[00:00:20]
To say the least we were hard pressed[00:00:22]
Then mama spent every last penny we had[00:00:25]
To buy me a dancin' dress[00:00:27]
Mama washed and combed and curled my hair[00:00:30]
And she painted my eyes and lips[00:00:32]
Then i stepped into a satin[00:00:35]
Dancin' dress that had a split on[00:00:36]
The side clean up to my hip[00:00:39]
It was red velvet trim and it fit me good[00:00:41]
Standin' back from the lookin' glass[00:00:45]
There stood a woman[00:00:47]
Where a half gown kid had stood[00:00:48]
She said here's your one chance[00:00:50]
Fancy don't let me down[00:00:52]
She said here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:00:55]
Mama dabbed a little bit of perfume on my neck[00:01:03]
And she kissed my cheek[00:01:06]
Then i saw the tears wellin' up in her troubled eyes[00:01:07]
When she started to speak[00:01:11]
She looked at a pitiful shack[00:01:13]
And then she looked at me and took a ragged breath[00:01:14]
She said your pa's run off and i'm real sick[00:01:17]
And the baby's gonna starve to death[00:01:20]
She handed me a heart shaped locket that said[00:01:22]
"to thine own self be true"[00:01:25]
And i shivered as i watched a roach crawl across[00:01:27]
The tow of my high heel shoe[00:01:30]
It sounded like somebody else that was talkin'[00:01:33]
Askin' mama what do i do[00:01:35]
She said just be nice to the gentlemen fancy[00:01:37]
And they'll be nice to you[00:01:40]
She said here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:01:42]
Here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:01:47]
Lord forgive me for what i do but if you want out[00:01:52]
Well it's up to you[00:01:56]
Now don't let me down[00:01:57]
You better start movin' uptown[00:01:59]
Well that was the last time i saw my ma[00:02:05]
The night i left that rickety shack[00:02:07]
The welfare people came and took the baby[00:02:10]
Mama died and i ain't been back[00:02:12]
But the wheels of fate had started to turn[00:02:15]
And for me there was no way out[00:02:17]
And it wasn't very long 'til i knew exactly[00:02:20]
What my mama's been talkin' about[00:02:22]
I knew what i had to do[00:02:25]
But i made myself this solemn vow[00:02:26]
That i's gonna be a lady someday[00:02:30]
Though i don't know when or how[00:02:32]
I couldn't see spending the rest of my life[00:02:35]
With my head hung down in shame you know[00:02:37]
I might have been born just plain white trash[00:02:40]
But fancy was my name[00:02:42]
She said here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:02:44]
She said here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:02:49]
It wasn't very long after a benevolent man[00:02:57]
Took me off the street[00:02:59]
And one week later i was pourin' his tea[00:03:02]
In a five room hotel suite[00:03:04]
I charmed a king a congressman[00:03:07]
And an occasional aristocrat[00:03:09]
Then i got me a georgia mansion[00:03:12]
In an elegant new york townhouse flat[00:03:14]
And i ain't done bad[00:03:16]
Now in this world[00:03:27]
There's a lot of self-righteous hippocrits[00:03:28]
That would call me bad[00:03:29]
And criticize mama for turning me out[00:03:31]
No matter how little we had[00:03:34]
But though i ain't had to worry 'bout nothin'[00:03:36]
For nigh on fifteen years[00:03:39]
I can still hear the desperation in my poor[00:03:42]
Mama's voice ringin' in my ear[00:03:44]
She said here's your one chance[00:03:46]
Fancy don't let me down[00:03:48]
She said here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:03:51]
Lord forgive me for what i do[00:03:56]
But if you want out well it's up to you[00:03:59]
Now don't let me down[00:04:01]
Your mama's gonna help you uptown[00:04:03]
I guess she did[00:04:08]
