So What If I Couldn't Take It - Jeffrey Lewis[00:00:00]
So what if I just couldn't take it anymore[00:00:11]
I'll just take a walk to the store[00:00:15]
Looking for a bit of bottled rat poison to score[00:00:17]
And I'll pour down my gullet to nullify the sullenness[00:00:21]
If it's my destiny to kill me spill it in me[00:00:24]
To begin to fulfill it give it a couple of minutes until it hits[00:00:27]
But still it doesn't seem to be taking effect[00:00:33]
I'm still walking erect what the heck what the hell[00:00:36]
Well at least I paid the guy with a cheque[00:00:39]
So if the Bodega janked me on the poison I drank[00:00:42]
All I gotta do is place a cancel call to my bank[00:00:45]
But they put me on hold when I told them the story[00:00:48]
First I cursed in the phone but the music ignored me[00:00:51]
And it played and it played for such a long time[00:00:53]
And then a voice said "we'll be with you soon just stay on the line"[00:00:59]
But just at that second my neck broke out in a sweat[00:01:02]
I said "I bet this is it - the poison's starting to hit"[00:01:05]
I felt sick and in pain I dropped the phone to the ground[00:01:06]
And an operator came and said "can I help you now "[00:01:12]
But all that she could hear was just the sound of my death as I gasped into the set[00:01:15]
"Just let the guy cash the cheque" with my last rattling breath[00:01:19]
And the burning bottle of crap that I sickly held in my lap[00:01:21]
I quickly turned on the cap out of concern for the rats[00:01:26]
So what if I just couldn't take it anymore[00:01:31]
So what if I just couldn't take it anymore[00:01:43]
I'll just take the decision to walk on the bridge and try to fly like a pigeon[00:01:47]
And I tramp up the ramp and all the bicycles pass[00:01:53]
And I just can't help but laugh when I think back on my past[00:01:56]
And all of the retarded mistakes that I made[00:01:59]
The broken-hearted dismay that started from the first grade all the way up to today[00:02:01]
And the walkway is steep and the cars are all beeping[00:02:05]
And the people are sailing to wherever they're sailing[00:02:10]
And I'm climbing the railings[00:02:13]
I plan to stand and decide but I just slip and I dive[00:02:16]
And all the drunks on the side start to hold up their signs[00:02:21]
Mostly 7s and 9s but now and then is a 10[00:02:24]
And if I fell to earth I'd be dead that's for sure[00:02:26]
But like I said before it's only water[00:02:31]
And it's worthless 'cos it isn't on purpose[00:02:33]
But I bob to the surface[00:02:35]
But a large garbage barge comes[00:02:39]
And it drops 20 tonnes of toxic waste on my face[00:02:44]
And as I sink from the sun to whatever's to come[00:02:47]
My last sight is the Bums who all change their signs into 3s 2s and 1s [00:02:50]
And then after this discourse[00:02:55]
There's a 3 6 - of course it must be from Pitchfork[00:02:56]
So what if I just couldn't take it anymore[00:02:59]
So what if I just couldn't take it anymore[00:03:13]
Staring down at the floor staring up at the ceiling[00:03:17]
'Cos I never get used to always feeling so unglued[00:03:19]
Need new emails to read through while I eat old Chinese food[00:03:22]
I don't want a life that's like this just take a knife to my wrist quick[00:03:27]
All I've got is this chopstick but I could still make the plot thick[00:03:29]
Just for the sake of context if I break it with my fist[00:03:32]
For fun against my chest run into the wall next[00:03:35]
And I'll frown at the gash then lie down in the bath with some Sylvia Plath[00:03:39]
How many pages will pass until I'm facing my last[00:03:43]
I didn't major in Math so I won't wager no cash[00:03:46]
But truth is stranger than fashion[00:03:51]
And the danger is that all of the blood will amass[00:03:52]
And the tub will fill-up so fast [00:03:54]
'Til I'm encased like a crab in a bathtub-shaped scab[00:03:56]
They'll have to take in a cab and scrape off in a lab[00:03:58]
So what if I just couldn't take it anymore[00:04:03]
So what if I just couldn't take it anymore[00:04:15]
I'll just call up the Mob and say[00:04:20]
"I've got you a job I guess you know what to do [00:04:21]
Knock off this guy with the blues - an offer you can't refuse"[00:04:24]
And I'll fax them a contract through a third-party contact that says[00:04:27]
'Don't hold him for ransom I'll pay half in advance [00:04:32]
Just mail me one of his hands which I'll accept as your answer'[00:04:35]
So say it so happens:[00:04:38]
I happen to be out lying on a park bench and crying just like my normal way [00:04:41]
But in most former cases no-one comes out of no place[00:04:45]
Wraps masking tape on my face [00:04:49]
But that's what happens today [00:04:52]
But before I get knocked off my hand it gets chopped off[00:04:56]
And dropped in a mailbox [00:04:57]
And I'm locked in a trunk [00:04:59]
But I'm flung out on the tar when the car hits a bump at exit one twenty-five [00:04:59]
Out on the FDR drive[00:05:02]
