Poem in October - Richard Burton[00:00:00]
It was my thirtieth year to heaven[00:00:01]
Woke to my hearing from harbour[00:00:03]
And neighbour wood[00:00:05]
And the mussel pooled and the heron[00:00:05]
Priested shore[00:00:07]
The morning beckon[00:00:08]
With water praying and call of seagull and rook[00:00:09]
And the knock of sailing boats[00:00:12]
On the net webbed wall[00:00:14]
Myself to set foot[00:00:16]
That second[00:00:17]
In the still sleeping town and set forth [00:00:18]
My birthday began with the water-[00:00:24]
Birds and the birds of the[00:00:25]
Winged trees flying my name[00:00:27]
Above the farms and the white horses[00:00:28]
And I rose[00:00:30]
In rainy autumn[00:00:30]
And walked abroad in a shower of all my days [00:00:31]
High tide and the heron dived[00:00:36]
When I took the road[00:00:39]
Over the border[00:00:40]
And the gates[00:00:41]
Of the town closed as the town awoke [00:00:42]
A springful of larks in a rolling[00:00:45]
Cloud and the roadside bushes brimming with whistling[00:00:47]
Blackbirds and the sun of October[00:00:49]
Summery[00:00:52]
On the hill's shoulder [00:00:52]
Here were fond climates[00:00:55]
And sweet singers suddenly[00:00:56]
Come in the morning[00:00:58]
Where I wandered and listened[00:00:59]
To the rain wringing[00:01:01]
Wind blow cold[00:01:02]
In the wood faraway under me [00:01:04]
Pale rain over the dwindling harbour[00:01:09]
And over the sea wet church the size of a snail[00:01:12]
With it's horns through mist and the castle[00:01:15]
Brown as owls[00:01:17]
But all the gardens[00:01:19]
Of spring and summer were[00:01:20]
Blooming in the tall tales[00:01:21]
Beyond the border and under the lark full cloud [00:01:23]
There could I marvel[00:01:28]
My birthday[00:01:29]
Away but the weather turned around [00:01:30]
It turned away from the blithe country[00:01:36]
And down the other air[00:01:38]
And the blue altered sky[00:01:40]
Streamed again a wonder of summer[00:01:41]
With apples[00:01:43]
Pears and red currants[00:01:44]
And I saw in the turning so clearly a child's[00:01:45]
Forgotten mornings when he walked with his mother[00:01:48]
Through the parables[00:01:50]
Of sun light[00:01:51]
And the legends of the green chapels[00:01:52]
And the twice told fields of infancy[00:01:55]
That his tears burned my cheeks[00:01:58]
And his heart moved in mine [00:02:01]
These were the woods the river and sea[00:02:05]
Where a boy[00:02:07]
In the listening[00:02:08]
Summertime of the dead whispered the truth of his joy[00:02:09]
To the trees and the stones and the fish in the tide [00:02:11]
And the mystery[00:02:15]
Sang alive[00:02:16]
Still in the water and singingbirds [00:02:17]
And there could I marvel my birthday[00:02:21]
Away but the weather turned around [00:02:23]
And the true[00:02:28]
Joy of the long dead child sang burning[00:02:29]
In the sun [00:02:35]
It was my thirtieth[00:02:39]
Year to heaven stood there then[00:02:40]
In the summer noon[00:02:42]
Though the town below lay[00:02:44]
Leaved with October blood [00:02:45]
O may my heart's truth[00:02:50]
Still be sung[00:02:52]
On this high hill in a year's turning[00:02:53]
