Warlike Seamen - Ian Robb/Terry Rudden/Seamus Mcguire/Grit Laskin[00:00:00]
Come all you warlike seamen[00:00:02]
That to the seas belong [00:00:05]
I'll tell you of a fight my boys [00:00:08]
On board the Nottingham [00:00:11]
It was of an Irish Captain [00:00:14]
His name was Somerville [00:00:17]
With courage bold did he control [00:00:20]
He played his part so well [00:00:23]
It was on the eighth of June my boys [00:00:26]
When at Spithead we lay [00:00:30]
On board there came an order[00:00:33]
Our anchor for to weigh [00:00:36]
Bound for the coast of Ireland [00:00:39]
Our orders did run so [00:00:42]
For us to cruise and not refuse[00:00:45]
Against a daring foe [00:00:48]
We had not sailed many lengths[00:00:51]
At sea before a ship we spied [00:00:54]
She being some lofty Frenchman[00:00:57]
Come a-bearing down so wide [00:01:00]
We hailed her off France my boys [00:01:04]
They asked from where we came [00:01:07]
Our answer was From Liverpool[00:01:09]
And London is our name [00:01:13]
Oh pray are you some man of war[00:01:16]
Or pray what may you be [00:01:19]
Oh then replied our Captain [00:01:22]
And that you soon shall see [00:01:25]
Come strike your English colours[00:01:28]
Or else you shall bring to [00:01:32]
Since you're so stout you shall[00:01:34]
Give out or else we will sink you [00:01:37]
The first broadside we gave to them[00:01:41]
Which made them to to wonder [00:01:44]
Their main-mast and their rigging[00:01:47]
Came a-rattling down like thunder [00:01:50]
We drove them from their quarter[00:01:53]
They could no longer stay [00:01:57]
Our guns did roar we made so sure [00:01:59]
We showed them British play [00:02:03]
So now we've took that ship my boys [00:02:29]
God speed us fair wind[00:02:32]
That we might sail to Plymouth[00:02:35]
I own if the heavens prove so kind [00:02:37]
We'll drink a health unto our Captain[00:02:41]
And all such warlike souls [00:02:44]
To him we'll drink and never flinch[00:02:47]
Out of a flowing bowl[00:02:50]
