Patches - Anthony Armstrong Jones[00:00:00]
I was born and raised down in Alabama[00:00:04]
On a farm way back up in the woods[00:00:07]
I was so ragged that folks used to call me Patches[00:00:09]
Papa used to tease me about it[00:00:12]
'Cause deep down inside he was hurt[00:00:14]
'Cause he done all he could[00:00:16]
My papa was a great old man[00:00:18]
I can see him with a shovel in his hands see[00:00:21]
Education he never had[00:00:23]
He did wonders when the times got bad[00:00:26]
The little money from the crops he raised[00:00:28]
Barely paid the bills we made[00:00:31]
For life had kick him down to the ground[00:00:33]
When he tried to get up[00:00:36]
Life would kick him back down[00:00:37]
One day Papa called me to his dying bed[00:00:39]
Put his hands on my shoulders[00:00:41]
And in his tears he said[00:00:42]
He said Patches[00:00:44]
I'm depending on you son[00:00:44]
To pull the family through[00:00:47]
My son it's all left up to you[00:00:50]
Two days later Papa passed away and[00:00:58]
I became a man that day[00:00:59]
So I told Mama I was gonna quit school but[00:01:02]
She said that was Daddy's strictest rule[00:01:05]
So every morning fore I went to school[00:01:07]
I fed the chickens and I chopped wood too[00:01:10]
Sometimes I felt that I couldn't go on[00:01:12]
I wanted to leave just run away from home[00:01:15]
But I would remember what my daddy said[00:01:17]
With tears in his eyes on his dying bed[00:01:20]
He said Patches[00:01:22]
I'm depending on you son[00:01:23]
I tried to do my best[00:01:26]
It's up to you to do the rest[00:01:29]
Then one day a strong rain came[00:01:36]
And washed all the crops away[00:01:38]
And at the age of 13 I thought[00:01:40]
I was carrying the weight of the[00:01:42]
Whole world on my shoulders[00:01:43]
And you know Mama knew[00:01:45]
What I was going through[00:01:46]
'Cause every day I had to work the fields[00:01:49]
'Cause that's the only way we got our meals[00:01:51]
You see I was the oldest of the family[00:01:54]
And everybody else depended on me[00:01:57]
Every night I heard my Mama pray[00:01:59]
Lord give him the strength to face another day[00:02:02]
So years have passed and all the kids are grown[00:02:04]
The angels took Mama to a brand new home[00:02:07]
Lord knows people I shedded tears[00:02:09]
But my daddy's voice kept me through the years[00:02:12]
Patches I'm depending on you son[00:02:14]
To pull the family through[00:02:18]
My son it's all left up to you[00:02:21]
I can still hear Papa's voice saying[00:02:25]
Patches I'm depending on you son[00:02:28]
To pull the family through[00:02:31]
My son it's all left up to you[00:02:34]
