Let me tell you about a song[00:00:00]
That was brought to me by a good friend of mine[00:00:02]
Who's a good songwriter[00:00:05]
And everytime he brings me a song[00:00:06]
I'm always willing to listen[00:00:08]
But the story and the reasons[00:00:09]
For writing this song[00:00:11]
Were even more interesting to me than the song[00:00:13]
The old friend and fella[00:00:17]
I'm speaking of is Tommy Collins[00:00:18]
Tommy told me about an experience[00:00:21]
He had when he was a minister[00:00:22]
Where he was called to preach[00:00:24]
A funeral for a man with no identity[00:00:26]
Tommy said he never forgot the way he felt[00:00:29]
Like here is a human being[00:00:32]
Who someone must have loved at sometime[00:00:35]
And yet there was no one present to pay respect[00:00:38]
Just a couple of grave diggers[00:00:41]
A funeral man and Tommy[00:00:42]
Then the story switched to another[00:00:46]
Thought bout during his last visit to Nashville[00:00:47]
He went down to listen to an ole street singer[00:00:50]
That he always made a point to[00:00:53]
Go hear each time he was in town[00:00:54]
And it was then that Tommy discovered[00:00:57]
That Jack Dupree the ole[00:00:59]
Street singer had passed away[00:01:01]
And Tommy said he wondered[00:01:04]
How many were present at Jack's funeral[00:01:06]
And it was these two true to life incidents[00:01:09]
That inspired this song[00:01:12]
I only saw five people[00:01:18]
When they buried Jack Dupree[00:01:21]
Two diggers and the preacher[00:01:24]
The funeral man and me[00:01:26]
The pray was said and the hole was filled[00:01:29]
In less than half an hour[00:01:32]
And I said goodbye to the little man[00:01:34]
Who picked the wildwood flower [00:01:37]
For twenty years I'd seen him on[00:01:41]
The lower Nashville streets[00:01:44]
They said he always earned[00:01:46]
Enough to buy his clothes and eats[00:01:49]
He'd stop awhile and check his watch[00:01:52]
With the big clock on the tower[00:01:54]
That's when I asked him once[00:01:57]
If he could pick the wildwood flower [00:01:59]
He always drew a crowd[00:02:04]
Because he put on such a show[00:02:06]
He'd dance and sing and play[00:02:09]
And smile just like a polished pro[00:02:11]
And everytime he saw me standing in the crowd[00:02:14]
I knew the tune[00:02:20]
That he'd play next would be the wildwood flower [00:02:21]
I told him once that he could be[00:02:26]
What people call a star[00:02:29]
And he said why boy I'm happy[00:02:32]
How many of them folks are[00:02:35]
I'd hate to have to force a smile[00:02:37]
And feel myself turn sour[00:02:40]
There ain't no put on in my face[00:02:42]
When I pick the wildwood flower [00:02:45]
Then I saw a thousand people[00:02:52]
As they begin to come[00:02:54]
Business men and opry stars party girls and bums[00:02:57]
And on that little mound of[00:03:02]
Clay bouquets begin to shower[00:03:05]
As they paid respect to the little man[00:03:07]
Who picked the wildwood flower[00:03:10]
