Fern Hill - Richard Burton[00:00:00]
Now as I was young and easy[00:00:00]
Under the apple boughs[00:00:02]
About the lilting house and[00:00:04]
Happy as the grass was[00:00:05]
Green [00:00:07]
The night above the dingle starry [00:00:08]
Time let me hail and climb[00:00:10]
Golden in the heydays of his eyes [00:00:13]
And honoured among wagons[00:00:16]
I was prince of the apple[00:00:17]
Towns[00:00:18]
And once below a time[00:00:19]
I lordly had the trees and leaves[00:00:20]
Trail with daisies and barley[00:00:24]
Down the rivers of the windfall light [00:00:25]
And as I was green and carefree [00:00:30]
Famous among the barns[00:00:32]
About the happy yard and[00:00:33]
Singing as the farm was home [00:00:34]
In the sun that is young once only [00:00:36]
Time let me play and be[00:00:40]
Golden in the mercy of his means [00:00:42]
And green and golden[00:00:44]
I was huntsman and herdsman the[00:00:46]
Calves[00:00:47]
Sang to my horn [00:00:48]
The foxes on the hills barked clear[00:00:49]
And[00:00:52]
Cold [00:00:52]
And the sabbath rang slowly[00:00:53]
In the pebbles of the holy streams [00:00:56]
All the sun long it was running [00:01:00]
It was lovely the hay[00:01:01]
Fields high as the house [00:01:02]
The tunes from the chimneys [00:01:03]
It was[00:01:04]
Air[00:01:05]
And playing lovely and watery[00:01:05]
And fire green as grass [00:01:07]
And nightly under the simple stars[00:01:11]
As I rode to sleep[00:01:13]
The owls were bearing the farm away [00:01:14]
All the moon long I heard [00:01:17]
Blessed among stables the[00:01:19]
Nightjars[00:01:20]
Flying with the ricks and the horses[00:01:21]
Flashing into the dark [00:01:24]
And then to awake and the farm [00:01:29]
Like a wanderer white[00:01:34]
With the dew come back the cock on his shoulder:[00:01:35]
It Was all[00:01:38]
Shining it was Adam and maiden [00:01:40]
The sky gathered again[00:01:44]
And the sun grew round that very day [00:01:45]
So it must have been after the birth of the simple[00:01:49]
Light[00:01:52]
In the first spinning place the spellbound horses[00:01:53]
Walking[00:01:57]
Warm[00:01:58]
Out of the whinnying green stable[00:01:59]
On to the fields of praise [00:02:02]
And honoured among foxes and[00:02:06]
Pheasants by the gay house[00:02:07]
Under the new made clouds and[00:02:09]
Happy as the heart was[00:02:11]
Long [00:02:12]
In the sun born over and over [00:02:13]
I ran my heedless ways [00:02:16]
My wishes raced through the house high hay[00:02:18]
And nothing I cared [00:02:21]
At my sky blue trades that time[00:02:22]
Allows[00:02:24]
In all his tuneful turning so few and such morning[00:02:24]
Songs[00:02:29]
Before the children green and golden[00:02:31]
Follow him out of grace [00:02:35]
Nothing I cared in the lamb white days [00:02:38]
That time Would[00:02:41]
Take me[00:02:42]
Up to the swallow thronged[00:02:43]
Loft by the shadow of my[00:02:44]
Hand [00:02:45]
In the moon that is always rising [00:02:46]
Nor that riding to sleep[00:02:49]
I should hear him fly with the high fields[00:02:51]
And wake to the farm[00:02:54]
Forever fled from the childless[00:02:56]
Land [00:02:58]
Oh as I was young and easy[00:03:01]
In the mercy of his means [00:03:04]
Time held me green and dying[00:03:07]
Though I sang in my chains like the sea[00:03:14]
