浣滆瘝 : Traditional[00:03:05]
The Old Orange Flute[00:03:05]
In the county Tyrone, near the town of Dungannon[00:03:05]
Where many's the ruction meself had a hand in[00:03:05]
Bob Williamson lived there, a weaver by trade[00:03:05]
And all of us thought him a stout Orange blade.[00:03:05]
On the twelfth of July as it yearly did come[00:03:05]
Bob played on the flute to the sound of the drum[00:03:05]
You can talk of your fiddles, your harp or your lute[00:03:05]
But there's nothing could sound like the Old Orange Flute.[00:03:05]
But the treacherous scoundrel, he took us all in[00:03:05]
For he married a Papist named Bridget McGinn[00:03:05]
Turned Papish himself and forsook the Old Cause[00:03:05]
That gave us our freedom, religion and laws.[00:03:05]
And the boys in the county made such a stir on it[00:03:05]
They forced Bob to flee to the province of Connaught;[00:03:05]
Took with him his wife and his fixins, to boot,[00:03:05]
And along with the rest went the Old Orange Flute.[00:03:05]
Each Sunday at mass, to atone for past deeds,[00:03:05]
Bob said Paters and Aves and counted his beads[00:03:05]
Till one Sunday morn, at the priest's own require[00:03:05]
Bob went for to play with the flutes in the choir.[00:03:05]
He went for to play with the flutes in the mass[00:03:05]
But the instrument quivered and cried."O Alas!"[00:03:05]
And blow as he would, though he made a great noise,[00:03:05]
The flute would play only "The Protestant Boys".[00:03:05]
Bob jumped up and huffed, and was all in a flutter.[00:03:05]
He pitched the old flute in the blest holy water;[00:03:05]
He thought that this charm would bring some other sound,[00:03:05]
When he tried it again, it played "Croppies Lie Down!"[00:03:05]
And for all he would finger and twiddle and blow[00:03:05]
For to play Papish music, the flute would not go;[00:03:05]
"Kick the Pope" to "Boyne Water" was all it would sound[00:03:05]
Not one Papish bleat in it could e'er be found.[00:03:05]
At a council of priests that was held the next day[00:03:05]
They decided to banish the Old Flute away;[00:03:05]
They couldn't knock heresy out of its head[00:03:05]
So they bought Bob another to play in its stead.[00:03:05]
And the Old Flute was doomed, and its fate was pathetic[00:03:05]
'Twas fastened and burnt at the stake as heretic.[00:03:05]
As the flames rose around it, you could hear a strange noise[00:03:05]
'Twas the Old Flute still a-whistlin' "The Protestant Boys".[00:03:05]
Note: the tune Protestant Boys is also known as Lilliburlero RG[00:03:05]
