The Wrist Watch [00:00:01]
It is generally believed that wristwatches are an exception [00:00:03]
to the normal sequence in the evolution of men's jewelry. [00:00:07]
Reversing the usual order, they were first worn by women and then [00:00:12]
adopted by men. [00:00:18]
In the old days, queens included wristwatches among their crown [00:00:20]
jewelry. [00:00:25]
Later they were worn by Swiss workers and farmers. [00:00:26]
Until World War I, Americans associated the watch with [00:00:32]
fortune hunters. [00:00:36]
Then army officers discovered that the wristwatch was [00:00:38]
most practical for active combat. [00:00:42]
Race car drivers also loved to wear wristwatches and pilots [00:00:46]
found them most useful while flying. [00:00:51]
Soon men dared to wear wristwatches without feeling [00:00:55]
self-conscious. [00:01:00]
By 1924 some 30% of men's watches were worn on the wrist. [00:01:02]
Today the figure is 90% and they are now worn by both men and[00:01:10]
women for practical purposes rather than for decoration. [00:01:16]
