The Legend Of Wooley Swamp(Album Version)

The Legend Of Wooley Swamp -The Charlie Daniels Band[00:00:00]

Well, if you ever go back into Wooley Swamp,[00:00:19]

Well, you better not go at night.[00:00:22]

There's things out there in the middle of them woods[00:00:24]

That make a strong man die from fright.[00:00:26]

Things that crawl and things that fly[00:00:29]

And things that creep around on the ground.[00:00:31]

And they say the ghost of Lucius Clay gets up and he walks around.[00:00:33]

[Chorus[00:00:37]

But I couldn't believe it.[00:00:37]

I just had to find out for myself.[00:00:40]

And I couldn't conceive it[00:00:42]

'Cause I never would have listened to nobody else.[00:00:43]

And I couldn't believe it.[00:00:47]

I just had to find out for myself[00:00:50]

There's somethings in this world you just[00:00:53]

Can't explain.[00:00:55]

Spoken:[00:00:56]

The old man lived in the Wooley Swamp way back in Booger Woods.[00:01:00]

He never did do a lot of harm in the world,[00:01:05]

But he never did do no good[00:01:07]

People didn't think too much of him[00:01:09]

They all thought he acted funny[00:01:11]

The old man didn't care about people anyway[00:01:13]

All he cared about was his money.[00:01:16]

He'd stuff it all down in mason jars[00:01:18]

And he'd bury it all around[00:01:20]

And on certain nights[00:01:23]

If the moon was right[00:01:24]

H e'd dig it up out of the ground.[00:01:25]

He'd pour it all out on the floor of his shack[00:01:28]

And run his fingers through it.[00:01:30]

Yeah, Lucius Clay was a greedy old man[00:01:32]

And that's all that there was to it.[00:01:34]

Cable boys was white trash[00:02:04]

They lived over on Carver's Creek.[00:02:06]

They were mean as a snake[00:02:08]

And sneaky as a cat[00:02:10]

And belligerent when they'd speak.[00:02:11]

One night the oldest brother said,[00:02:13]

"Y'all meet me at the Wooley Swamp later[00:02:15]

We'll take old Lucius's money[00:02:18]

And we'll feed him to the alligators."[00:02:19]

They found the old man out in the back[00:02:22]

With a shovel in his hand,[00:02:24]

Thirteen rusty mason jars[00:02:26]

Was just dug up out of the sand.[00:02:29]

And they all went crazy[00:02:31]

And they beat the old man,[00:02:33]

And they picked him up off of the ground.[00:02:34]

Threw him in the swamp[00:02:36]

And stood there and laughed[00:02:38]

As the black water sucked him down.[00:02:39]

Then they turned around[00:02:40]

And went back to the shack[00:02:42]

And picked up the money and ran.[00:02:43]

They hadn't gone nowhere[00:02:45]

When they realized[00:02:46]

They were running in quicksand.[00:02:47]

And they struggled and they screamed[00:02:49]

But they couldn't get away[00:02:51]

And just before they went under[00:02:53]

They could hear that old man laughing[00:02:55]

In a voice as loud as thunder.[00:02:57]

And that's been fifty years ago[00:03:00]

And you can go by there yet.[00:03:03]

There's a spot in the yard[00:03:05]

In the back of that shack[00:03:06]

Where the ground is always wet.[00:03:09]

And on summer nights[00:03:13]

If the moon is right[00:03:15]

Down by the that dark footpath,[00:03:17]

You can hear three young men screaming.[00:03:18]

You can hear one old man laugh.[00:03:20]
