Christmas As I Knew It - Johnny Cash[00:00:02]
One day near Christmas when I was just a child[00:00:09]
Mama called us together and mama tried to smile[00:00:12]
She said you know[00:00:16]
The cottoncrop hasn't been too good this year[00:00:16]
There's just no spending money[00:00:20]
And well at least we're all here[00:00:23]
I hope you won't expect a lot of Christmas presents[00:00:25]
Just be thankful that there is plenty to eat[00:00:28]
That's quite a blessing[00:00:30]
That'll make things a little more pleasant[00:00:32]
And us kids got to thinking how really blessed we were[00:00:35]
At least we were all healthy and best of all we had her[00:00:39]
Roy cut down a pigapple tree[00:00:45]
And we drug it home Jack and me[00:00:47]
Daddy killed a squirrel and Louise made the bread[00:00:50]
Reba decorated the tree with popcorn strings[00:00:54]
Before we went to bed[00:00:56]
Mama and daddy sacrificed 'cause this Christmas was lean[00:00:59]
But after all there was the babies[00:01:03]
Joanne and Tom babies need a few things[00:01:05]
I whittled a whistle for my brother Jack[00:01:11]
And though we fought now and then[00:01:14]
When I gave Jack that whistle[00:01:17]
He knew I thought the world of him[00:01:18]
Mama made the girl's dresses out of flower sacks[00:01:22]
And when she ironed them down[00:01:25]
You couldn't tell that they hadn't come from town[00:01:26]
A sharecropped family across the road[00:01:29]
Didn't have it as good as us[00:01:32]
They didn't even have a light[00:01:34]
And it was way past dusk[00:01:37]
Me and Jack took a jar of coaloil[00:01:41]
And some hickernuts we'd found[00:01:43]
We walked to the sharecropper's porch and set 'em down[00:01:45]
A poor old ragged lady eased open the door[00:01:50]
She picked up the coaloil and hickernuts and said[00:01:53]
I sure do thank ye and quickly closed the door[00:01:55]
We started back home me[00:02:00]
And Jack and about halfway we stopped looked back[00:02:01]
And in the sharecropper's window at last was a light[00:02:04]
So for one of the neighbors[00:02:08]
And for us it was a good Christmas night[00:02:09]
Christmas came and Christmas went Christmas[00:02:14]
That year was heaven sent[00:02:18]
Then daddy put on his gumboots[00:02:20]
Waited for the thaw back home in Dyess Arkansas[00:02:22]
