Kilnamartyra Exile - Niamh Parsons[00:00:00]
I am a lonely exile, who left my own dear nation,[00:00:04]
To seek a situation in a land beyond the foam;[00:00:14]
I have travelled o'er the ocean,[00:00:23]
admidst hardship and through dangers,[00:00:28]
And for years I've been a stranger,[00:00:34]
to my own dear native home.[00:00:39]
Where once I lived contentedly,[00:00:44]
with friends I loved surrounding me.[00:00:48]
Care nor grief ne'er troubled me,[00:00:54]
nor made my heart feel sore,[00:00:58]
But when my days are over[00:01:04]
and I'm parted from my country,[00:01:09]
And Kilnamartyra homely face,[00:01:14]
my eyes shall see no more.[00:01:19]
It was there my heart felt happy,[00:01:26]
before I took a notion[00:01:30]
To sail across the ocean,[00:01:35]
from the land that gave me birth;[00:01:40]
Though dark and dismal clouds have[00:01:45]
cast their shadows o'er me,[00:01:50]
And I knew but pleasure only[00:01:55]
while stood on Irish earth.[00:02:00]
And though the money tempted me,[00:02:05]
far from my cabin home to flee,[00:02:10]
And sail across the stormy sea,[00:02:16]
in search of gold and store;[00:02:20]
I sailed away from Erin,[00:02:25]
far from the land that bore,[00:02:30]
And bade my friends in Ireland[00:02:36]
arewell for ever more.[00:02:40]
I have travelled through Columbia,[00:02:46]
all toil and danger storming[00:02:51]
From it's farthest eastern borders,[00:02:56]
to the westward and the deep;[00:03:01]
From its broad extended cotton fields,[00:03:06]
on the plains of Alabama,[00:03:11]
To the coal mines of Montana[00:03:17]
and Rockies wild and steep.[00:03:21]
I hunted for prosperity[00:03:26]
but still it has eluded me,[00:03:31]
and bleak misfortune followed me,[00:03:37]
no matter where I'd roam,[00:03:41]
And often in my anguish,[00:03:47]
I cursed the fate that took me,[00:03:51]
From the comrades of my boyhood[00:03:57]
and the land I loved so well.[00:04:01]
Brief boyhood recollections,[00:04:07]
Shall ever fondly bind me[00:04:12]
To the friends I left behind me,[00:04:17]
across the raging main;[00:04:22]
And to you, sweet Kilnamartyra,[00:04:27]
where one time I resided,[00:04:33]
But now I am divided[00:04:38]
by the ocean waves from thee.[00:04:43]
Now age is overtaking me[00:04:48]
and youth is fast forsaking me,[00:04:53]
And friends that once delighted me,[00:05:00]
perhaps I'll see no more,[00:05:04]
And when my days are over[00:05:09]
and death has come and taken me,[00:05:14]
I fondly will remember thee[00:05:21]
dear land that I adore.[00:05:26]
