i found a shelter and garden,[00:00:17]
on the corner of fountain and vine.[00:00:19]
it's made for gamblers who lose,[00:00:21]
a place for brave men to whine.[00:00:23]
every so often there's trouble,[00:00:26]
somebody could lose a life.[00:00:27]
i just sit on the back porch,[00:00:30]
and eat apples with my knife.[00:00:32]
isabella comes to visit,[00:00:34]
she can talk all day and night.[00:00:36]
cursing the republican government,[00:00:38]
i can't say if she's wrong or right.[00:00:40]
i said i admired her hatred,[00:00:42]
i'm not one to take sides.[00:00:44]
she kissed me and tried to persuade me,[00:00:46]
so i had no choice, i had to lie.[00:00:49]
in the morning she left me a letter,[00:00:54]
i couldn't make out a single word.[00:00:56]
i'm sure it was something outrageous,[00:00:59]
about her trying to save the world.[00:01:01]
it was then that i got so depressed,[00:01:03]
in this world i make no difference.[00:01:05]
i just hang out with thieves,[00:01:07]
spitting apple seeds at the fence.[00:01:09]
so i picked up the la times,[00:01:11]
and read to page 22.[00:01:13]
it was there that i found my purpose,[00:01:16]
to help dogs from being abused.[00:01:18]
i began to tell all my friends,[00:01:20]
about these dogs in need.[00:01:22]
i said, “did you know in some parts of china,[00:01:24]
all the dogs have fleas?”[00:01:26]
they said i was crazy,[00:01:36]
laughed and shook their heads.[00:01:39]
said maybe i would have found jesus,[00:01:41]
in another girl's bed.[00:01:42]
but i was off to the white house,[00:01:45]
with 6 greyhounds and a sign.[00:01:46]
practiced my speech to the president,[00:01:49]
i memorized every line.[00:01:51]
after a few days i made friends,[00:01:53]
to help me with my cause.[00:01:55]
we even made the local news,[00:01:57]
chanting, lets save the dogs![00:01:59]
it brought a tear to my eye,[00:02:18]
they understood what i had to say.[00:02:20]
and just like isabella,[00:02:22]
i was talking all night and day.[00:02:24]
i was talking at the racetrack.[00:02:26]
i was talking on the radio.[00:02:28]
i was talking at the cathedral,[00:02:30]
and at the pound with my megaphone[00:02:32]
and then one sunny morning,[00:02:35]
preaching at the dog parade.[00:02:37]
i had a crowd of 2,000,[00:02:39]
hanging on every word i'd say.[00:02:41]
i swore i'd see them through.[00:02:43]
we'd fight until the end.[00:02:45]
when a bulldog barked right at me,[00:02:47]
and tore up my left hand.[00:02:49]
as the blood ran down my arm,[00:02:51]
from my elbow to the floor,[00:02:53]
i knew i'd lose my temper.[00:02:55]
i couldn't take anymore.[00:02:57]
i screamed, that's it, i give up![00:03:00]
these dogs don't give a damn![00:03:02]
they all called me a traitor,[00:03:04]
said, go back to from where you came![00:03:06]
so that's just what i did,[00:03:15]
and they welcomed me with open arms.[00:03:18]
and the freshest basket of apples,[00:03:20]
straight from cortez farms.[00:03:22]
i told isabella my story.[00:03:24]
i thought she'd understand.[00:03:26]
but she called me a failure,[00:03:29]
and knocked the fruit from my hands.[00:03:31]
i guess maybe she was right.[00:03:32]
i was just a phony from the start.[00:03:34]
but these apples never tasted sweeter,[00:03:36]
and i know who my real friends are[00:03:39]
