Authur McBride - Galway City Ramblers[00:00:00]
Me and my cousin one Arthur McBride[00:00:03]
As we went a walking down by the seaside[00:00:06]
Now mark what followed and what did betide[00:00:11]
For it being on Christmas morning[00:00:15]
Out for recreation we went on a tramp[00:00:19]
And we met sergeant napper and corporal vamp[00:00:23]
And a little wee drummer intending to camp[00:00:28]
For the day being pleasant and charming[00:00:32]
Good morning good morning the sergeant did cry[00:00:37]
And the same to you gentlemen we did reply[00:00:41]
Intending no harm but meant to pass by[00:00:45]
For it being on Christmas morning[00:00:50]
But says he my fine fellows if you will enlist[00:00:54]
It's ten guineas in gold I will slip in your fist[00:00:58]
And a crown in the bargain for to kick up the dust[00:01:02]
And drink the king's health in the morning[00:01:06]
For a soldier he leads a very fine life[00:01:12]
And he always is blessed with a charming young wife[00:01:16]
And he pays all his debts without sorrow or strife[00:01:20]
And always lives pleasant and charming[00:01:24]
And a soldier he always is decent and clean[00:01:28]
In the finest of clothing he's constantly seen[00:01:33]
While other poor fellows go dirty and mean[00:01:37]
And sup on thin gruel in the morning[00:01:41]
But says arthur I wouldn't be proud of your clothes[00:01:46]
For you've only the lend of them as I suppose[00:01:50]
And you dare not change them one night for you know[00:01:54]
If you do you'll be flogged in the morning[00:01:58]
And although that we are single and free[00:02:03]
We take great delight in our own company[00:02:07]
And we have no desire strange faces to see[00:02:11]
Although that your offers are charming[00:02:16]
And we have no desire to take your advance[00:02:21]
All hazards and dangers we barter on chance[00:02:25]
For you would have no scruples for to send us to France[00:02:29]
Where we would get shot without warning[00:02:33]
Oh now says the sergeant I'll have no such chat[00:02:37]
And I neither will take it from spalpeen or brat[00:02:41]
For if you insult me with one other word[00:02:46]
I'll cut off your heads in the morning[00:02:50]
And then arthur and I we soon drew our hods[00:02:55]
And we gave them no time for to draw their own blades[00:02:59]
When a trusty shillelagh came over their heads[00:03:04]
And bade them take that as fair warning[00:03:08]
And their old rusty rapiers that hung by their side[00:03:12]
We flung them as far as we could in the tide[00:03:16]
Now take them out divils cried Arthur Mcbride[00:03:20]
And temper their edge in the morning[00:03:25]
And the little wee drummer we flattened his pow[00:03:30]
And we made a football of his rowdeydowdow[00:03:34]
Threw it in the tide for to rock and to row[00:03:38]
And bade it a tedious returning[00:03:42]
And we having no money paid them off in cracks[00:03:46]
And we paid no respect to their two b***** backs[00:03:51]
For we lathered them there like a pair of wet sacks[00:03:55]
And left them for dead in the morning[00:03:59]
Me and my cousin one Arthur Mcbride[00:04:04]
As we went a walkin' down by the seaside[00:04:08]
Now mark what followed and what did betide[00:04:13]
For it being on Christmas morning[00:04:17]
And so to conclude and to finish disputes[00:04:21]
We obligingly asked if they wanted recruits[00:04:25]
For we were the lads who would give them hard clouts[00:04:30]
And bid them look sharp in the morning[00:04:34]
