1913 Massacre - Ramblin' Jack Elliott[00:00:00]
Written by:Woody Guthrie[00:00:01]
Take a trip with me in nineteen thirteen[00:00:03]
To Calumet Michigan in the copper country[00:00:09]
I'll take you to a place called italian hall[00:00:15]
And the miners are having their big christmas ball[00:00:21]
I'll take you in a door and up a high stairs[00:00:30]
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere[00:00:34]
I'll let you shake hands with the people you see[00:00:38]
And watch the kids dance around the big christmas tree[00:00:44]
There's talking and laughing and songs in the air[00:00:53]
And the spirit of christmas is there everywhere[00:00:57]
Before you know it you're friends with us all[00:01:00]
And you're dancing around and around in the hall[00:01:06]
You ask about work and you ask about the pay[00:01:14]
They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day[00:01:18]
Working their copper claims risking their lives[00:01:22]
So it's fun to spend christmas with children and wives[00:01:27]
A little girl sits down by the christmas tree lights[00:01:35]
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet[00:01:39]
To hear all this fun you would not realize[00:01:42]
That the copper boss thug men are milling outside[00:01:47]
The copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door[00:01:56]
One of them yelled and he screamed there's a fire[00:01:59]
A lady she hollered there's no such a thing[00:02:03]
Keep on with your party there's no such a thing[00:02:08]
A few people rushed and there's only a few[00:02:17]
It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you[00:02:20]
A man grabbed his daughter and he carried her down[00:02:24]
But the thugs held the door and he could not get out[00:02:27]
And then others followed a hundred or more[00:02:36]
But most everybody remained on the floor[00:02:40]
The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke[00:02:44]
And the children were smothered on the stairs by the door[00:02:48]
Such a terrible sight I never did see[00:02:57]
We carried our children back up to their tree[00:03:00]
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree[00:03:04]
And the children that died there was seventy three[00:03:13]
The piano played a slow funeral tune[00:03:22]
And the town was lit up by a cold christmas moon[00:03:26]
The parents they cried and the miners they moaned[00:03:31]
See what your greed for money has done[00:03:38]
