Fancy - The Geraldine Fibbers[00:00:00]
Written by:The Geraldine Fibbers[00:00:01]
I remember it all very well looking back it was the summer I turned 16[00:00:10]
We lived in a one room rundown shack on the outskirts of new Orleans[00:00:15]
We didn't have money for food or rent[00:00:20]
To say the least we were hard pressed[00:00:23]
And mama scraped every penny she had to by me a satin dancing dress[00:00:25]
Mama washed and combed and curled my[00:00:30]
Hair and she painted up my eyes and lips[00:00:33]
Then I stepped into that satin dancing[00:00:35]
Dress it was slit on the side straight up to my hips[00:00:37]
It was red velvet trimmed and it fit me good[00:00:41]
And looking back from the mirror was a woman[00:00:45]
Where a half grown kid had stood[00:00:48]
Here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:00:55]
Here's your chance now fancy don't let me down now[00:01:00]
Mama looked out our pitiful shack and she[00:01:11]
Looked at me and took a ragged breath[00:01:13]
She said your pa's run off and[00:01:15]
I'm real sick and the baby's gonna starve to death[00:01:17]
She handed me a heart shape locket that said to thine ownself be true[00:01:20]
And I shivered as[00:01:25]
I watched a roach crawl across the toe of my high heeled shoe[00:01:26]
It sounded like someone else who was talking saying mama what should I do[00:01:31]
Just be nice to the gentlemen fancy and they'll be nice to you[00:01:35]
Here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:01:46]
Here's your chance now fancy don't let me down now[00:01:51]
Lord forgive me for what I do[00:01:56]
But if you want out girl it's up to you[00:01:58]
Get on out now you'd better start moving up town[00:02:01]
Well that was the last time[00:02:13]
I saw my mama when I left that rickety shack[00:02:15]
The welfare people came and took the baby mama died and I ain't been back[00:02:18]
I did what I had to do but I made myself a solemn vow[00:02:23]
That I was gonna be a lady someday though I didn't know where to how[00:02:28]
I couldn't see spending the rest of[00:02:33]
My life with my head hung down in shame[00:02:35]
I may have been born just plain white trash but fancy was my name[00:02:38]
Here's your one chance fancy don't let me down[00:02:49]
Here's your chance now fancy don't let me down now[00:02:54]
Lord forgive me for what I do[00:02:58]
But if you want out girl it's up to you[00:03:01]
Get on out now you'd better start moving up town[00:03:03]
It wasn't long after a benevolent man took me in off of the streets[00:03:16]
And one week later I was pouring his tea in a five room hotel suite[00:03:21]
I charmed a king a congress man and an occasional aristocrat[00:03:26]
Then I got me a Georgia mansion and an elegant New York townhouse flat[00:03:31]
I ain't done bad[00:03:35]
