Rehearsing My Choir - The Fiery Furnaces[00:00:00]
Written by:Matthew Friedberger[00:00:00]
But there was one man always whom[00:00:00]
I didn't get along[00:00:02]
The bishop[00:00:10]
Would head down head down to[00:00:11]
Deerport station[00:00:13]
To see what stars on[00:00:14]
The silver screen might be seen[00:00:15]
Or broadway stage were all the rage[00:00:17]
With his black leather autograph book[00:00:19]
And his black leather pastoral pumps[00:00:21]
And his pressed black robes[00:00:24]
And his tidy black beard of which he[00:00:25]
Was so proud[00:00:27]
And his hat that stuck out in a crowd[00:00:28]
But there he'd sit[00:00:31]
At his table at the edgewater hotel[00:00:32]
Wearing his ecclesiastical furs[00:00:34]
And lunching with two giggly and[00:00:37]
None too healthy looking young men[00:00:38]
And in his shirt pocket up close to[00:00:40]
His heart was his[00:00:41]
Autographed picture of Robert Mitchum[00:00:42]
Which he no doubt used in an impure way[00:00:44]
And I was at home rehearsing my choir[00:00:46]
On christmas day[00:01:17]
In the afternoon[00:01:19]
I got a call at home[00:01:21]
The bishop was on the phone[00:01:24]
Wanting the choir to go and sing[00:01:27]
On some channel 44 thing[00:01:29]
And I said out of the question the rest of[00:01:37]
The day is for their families[00:01:40]
And the bishop became furious[00:01:41]
All that time singing western music[00:01:43]
Christmas carols backsliding[00:01:45]
And no time to represent the diocese[00:01:47]
But of course he was just upset because[00:01:50]
He wanted to be on the show[00:01:52]
And he hated women[00:01:54]
And I knew he was angry with me[00:01:57]
But I couldn't worry about it[00:01:58]
I went about my business[00:02:02]
Rehearsing my choir[00:02:06]
Rehearsing my choir[00:02:11]
Da da da da da da da[00:02:28]
Again da da da da da da da[00:02:30]
Ugh altos out of tune[00:02:32]
Da da da da da da da[00:02:53]
That's not good da da da da da da da[00:02:55]
That sounds horrible[00:02:58]
Next Sunday was my late sister's namesday[00:03:07]
La la la[00:03:13]
And the bishop was coming that day to[00:03:21]
Our church to deliver a sermon[00:03:23]
Which would give me quite a big surprise[00:03:26]
Decadence in the church[00:03:29]
Betrayal of our traditions[00:03:33]
Look up in the choir loft for instance the lady in red[00:03:37]
Eva[00:03:41]
I ban her from receiving communion[00:03:42]
And remove her as choir director[00:03:44]
I couldn't believe my ears[00:03:46]
And the congregation couldn't believe theirs[00:03:48]
And my husband was furious when he was told as[00:03:50]
He wasn't there at the time[00:03:52]
And letters were written and phone calls were placed[00:03:54]
And the matter was taken up and I was granted an audience[00:03:57]
And I sat there nervous and frightened[00:04:03]
When into the room[00:04:06]
Stepped his eminence[00:04:07]
The Archbishop[00:04:09]
They had a strange deliberating[00:04:43]
Process at his initiative[00:04:44]
As it was his prerogative alone[00:04:46]
But the hierarch with the tallest hat and[00:04:49]
Longest beard would stand in the middle[00:04:50]
And the prelates with shorter hats and beards radiated out[00:04:53]
With the archbishop in front of them[00:04:55]
And then they began to intone[00:04:58]
And I was left on the other side of the door alone[00:05:00]
And when they came out bishop Nikolaki was sent off to[00:05:05]
San Jose[00:05:08]
