Daddy's Cup - Drive-By Truckers[00:00:00]
Before I could walk I had a wrench in my hand[00:00:18]
I was my mama's little angel and my daddy's second chance[00:00:22]
He went end over end the first year he went pro[00:00:26]
Lost part of his eyesight and he couldn't race no more[00:00:30]
He never lost his touch when he got underneath the hood[00:00:39]
He knew how to make them run[00:00:43]
He knew one day he would see[00:00:45]
His name in victory lane and engraved on that cup[00:00:47]
Just like all them other crazy fools with racing in their blood[00:00:50]
He would put me on his lap[00:01:00]
When he'd drive and I'd take the wheel[00:01:01]
He'd say what do you think about that son how does she feel[00:01:04]
You just wait till them little legs get long enough to reach the gas[00:01:08]
Once you put her on the floor one time there ain't no turning back[00:01:11]
Every Saturday he'd take me out to the garage[00:01:23]
He'd take an empty bucket and fill it full of engine parts[00:01:27]
He's sit me down and pour em out in front of me on the floor[00:01:31]
I'd have to tell him what each one was and what each one was for[00:01:35]
We'd jump into the car and go down to the race that night[00:01:44]
He'd tell me what each driver was doing wrong and what each one did right[00:01:48]
He could always pick the winner before they ever took a curve[00:01:52]
3 might have the car but 43 has got the nerve[00:01:55]
Before I turned 18 daddy said now pretty soon[00:02:05]
You'll be old enough to drive but I'll leave it up to you[00:02:08]
I taught you all about it taught you everything I know[00:02:13]
You gotta have a car to do it[00:02:16]
And you gotta work and buy your own[00:02:18]
The first one I bought was a mustang 2[00:02:59]
Nobody kept 'em any longer than they kept a pair of shoes[00:03:03]
They started showing up at every used car lot in town[00:03:08]
A v-8 on a go-cart easy terms no money down[00:03:11]
Me and daddy and my uncle took her home and tore her down[00:03:20]
Checked her out real good cleaned her up and bored her out[00:03:24]
Took out all the seats pulled the carpet off the floor[00:03:28]
Knocked out all the glass and welded up the doors[00:03:32]
The first time that I raced my qualifying was a shame[00:03:41]
I started out way in the back and came back about the same[00:03:45]
I pulled her in the pit couldn't look my daddy in the eye[00:03:49]
He said if you quit now son it's gonna haunt you all your life[00:03:52]
It ain't about the money or even being 1[00:03:59]
You gotta know when it's all over you did the best you could've done[00:04:03]
Knowing that it's in you and you never let it out[00:04:07]
Is worse than blowing any engine or any wreck you'll ever have[00:04:11]
Since then I've wrecked a bunch of cars and I've broke a bunch of bones[00:04:20]
It's anybody's race out there and I've learned to race my own[00:04:24]
I'd shove em in the wall and I'd hit em from behind[00:04:28]
I'd let them know that I was there[00:04:31]
I'd let them know that track was mine[00:04:33]
It's been several years now since my daddy passed away[00:04:41]
But his picture's on my dash every time I go to race[00:04:44]
I lost more than I won but I ain't gonna give up[00:04:48]
Till they put me in the ground or daddy's name's on that cup[00:04:52]
