Breakfast in Hell (Live) - Slaid Cleaves[00:00:00]
Written by:Slaid Cleaves[00:00:00]
In the melting snows of Ontario[00:00:20]
Where the wind'll make you shiver[00:00:22]
It was the month of May up in Georgian Bay[00:00:25]
Near the mouth of the Musquash River[00:00:27]
Where the bears prowl and the coyotes howl[00:00:30]
And you can hear the osprey scream[00:00:33]
Back in '99 we were cutting pine[00:00:37]
And sending it down the stream[00:00:40]
Young Sandy Gray came to Go Home Bay[00:00:44]
All the way from P.E.I.[00:00:46]
Where the weather's rough and it makes you tough[00:00:49]
No man's afraid to die[00:00:52]
Sandy came a smilin' Thirty Thousand Islands[00:00:55]
Was the place to claim his glory[00:00:58]
Now Sandy's gone but his name lives on[00:01:02]
This is Sandy's story[00:01:05]
Young Sandy Gray lives on today[00:01:09]
In the echoes of a mighty yell[00:01:12]
Listen close and you'll hear a ghost[00:01:15]
In this story that I tell boys[00:01:17]
This story that I tell[00:01:20]
Now Sandy Gray was boss of the men who'd toss[00:01:27]
The trees onto the shore[00:01:30]
They'd come and go till they'd built a floe[00:01:32]
100000 logs or more[00:01:35]
And he'd ride 'em down toward Severn Sound[00:01:38]
To cut 'em up in the mills for timber[00:01:40]
And the ships would haul spring summer and fall[00:01:44]
Till the ice came in December[00:01:47]
One Sabbath Day big Sandy Gray[00:01:51]
Came into camp with a Peavey on his shoulder[00:01:54]
With a thunder crack he dropped his axe[00:01:56]
And the room got a little bit colder[00:01:59]
Said come on all you we got work to do[00:02:02]
We gotta give 'er all we can give 'er[00:02:05]
There's a jam of logs at the little jog[00:02:09]
Near the mouth of the Musquash River[00:02:12]
With no time to pray on the Lord's day[00:02:16]
They were hoping for God's forgiveness[00:02:19]
But the jam was high in a troubled sky[00:02:21]
And they set out about their business[00:02:24]
They poked with poles and ran with the rolls[00:02:27]
And tried to stay on their feet[00:02:30]
Every trick they tried one man cried[00:02:33]
This logjam's got us beat[00:02:37]
But Sandy Gray was not afraid[00:02:41]
And he let out a mighty yell[00:02:44]
I'll be damned we'll break this jam[00:02:47]
Or it's breakfast in hell boys[00:02:49]
Breakfast in hell[00:02:53]
Now every one of the men did the work of ten[00:04:54]
And Sandy scrambled up to the top[00:04:57]
He is working like a dog heaving 30 foot logs[00:04:59]
And it looked like he'd never stop[00:05:02]
They struggled on these men so strong[00:05:05]
Till the jam began to sway[00:05:07]
Then they dove for cover to the banks of the river[00:05:12]
All except for Sandy Gray[00:05:14]
Now with thoughts of death they held their breath[00:05:24]
As they saw their friend go down[00:05:26]
They all knew in a second or two[00:05:30]
He'd be crushed or frozen or drowned[00:05:32]
They saw him fall and they heard him call[00:05:35]
Just once and then it was over[00:05:37]
Young Sandy Gray gave his life that day[00:05:42]
Near the mouth of the Musquash River[00:05:44]
But Sandy Gray was not afraid[00:05:49]
And he let out a mighty yell[00:05:51]
I'll be damned we'll break this jam[00:05:54]
Or it's breakfast in hell boys[00:05:57]
Breakfast in hell[00:06:01]
East of Giant's Tomb there's plenty of room[00:06:13]
There's no fences and no walls[00:06:16]
And if you listen close you'll hear a ghost[00:06:18]
Down by Sandy Gray Falls[00:06:21]
Through the tops of the trees you'll hear in the breeze[00:06:24]
The echoes of a mighty yell[00:06:27]
I'll be damned we'll break this jam[00:06:39]
Or it's breakfast in hell[00:06:41]
And Sandy Gray lives on today[00:06:45]
And he let out a mighty yell[00:06:48]
I'll be damned we'll break this jam[00:06:51]
Or it's breakfast in hell boys[00:06:54]
Breakfast in hell[00:06:58]
