Johnny Willow - Fred Darian[00:00:00]
Johnny willow was a soldier[00:00:04]
In the us infantry[00:00:06]
And they sent him[00:00:08]
Off to battle in 1943[00:00:09]
Now johnny had a girl back home[00:00:15]
Her name was jenny may[00:00:17]
And he made a solemn promise[00:00:19]
That he'd write to her each day[00:00:21]
Was early monday morning[00:00:25]
And the sun began to shine[00:00:27]
And johnny thought he'd rest a while[00:00:29]
And drop his girl a line[00:00:31]
He took his pen and began to write[00:00:33]
My dearest darling may[00:00:35]
And a shot rang out and he turned around[00:00:37]
And he heard somebody say[00:00:39]
The enemy's coming up the hill[00:00:41]
There's a thousand if there's one[00:00:43]
A meaner bunch you've never seen[00:00:45]
Come on we better run[00:00:47]
But johnny jumped out to his feet[00:00:49]
He held the letter tight[00:00:52]
Come on you dog faced soldiers[00:00:54]
We're gonna stay and fight[00:00:56]
Well he dropped his pen[00:00:57]
And he grabbed his gun[00:00:59]
And he said I'll show you[00:01:00]
How to get them on the run[00:01:01]
Then he started in a-running[00:01:02]
And a-shooting down the hill[00:01:03]
Come on you men just fire at will[00:01:04]
I'm gonna keep the promise[00:01:06]
That I made to jenny may[00:01:08]
You can bet I'll finish this letter[00:01:10]
And I'll finish it today[00:01:12]
Well the bullets were a-coming[00:01:14]
From as far as you could see[00:01:15]
The hill was alive with the charging[00:01:16]
But johnny kept a-shooting[00:01:18]
A a-yelling just the same[00:01:19]
The more he kept a-shooting[00:01:20]
Well the more and more they came[00:01:21]
Then he looked down at the letter[00:01:22]
Still held in his hand[00:01:24]
And he said we won't move back an inch[00:01:26]
We're gonna make a stand[00:01:28]
Well he looked around[00:01:30]
And his heart did pound[00:01:31]
When he saw his regiment holding ground[00:01:32]
Old glory was a-flying[00:01:35]
And a-waving in the breeze[00:01:36]
Ain't never been an enemy[00:01:37]
To bring her to her knees[00:01:38]
And we ain't gonna let it happen[00:01:39]
Not now or ever more[00:01:41]
Besides I got a letter to write[00:01:43]
And mail it out by four[00:01:45]
Well the cannon was a-booming[00:01:47]
And the mortars were a-zooming[00:01:48]
And it looked the 4th of july[00:01:49]
And the hill was a-burning[00:01:51]
But the battle was turning[00:01:52]
Cause I heard johnny yell[00:01:53]
It's do or die[00:01:54]
Now the regiment stepped forward[00:01:55]
Some hung their heads to pray[00:01:57]
Then johnny held his gun up high[00:01:59]
And the charge was on it's way[00:02:02]
Well they ran down the hill[00:02:03]
Just a-shooting and a-yelling[00:02:05]
And mowing down the enemy[00:02:06]
As fast as I'm a-telling[00:02:07]
Like a river over rapids[00:02:08]
Just a-flowing and a-going[00:02:08]
While a drummer was a-drumming[00:02:09]
And a bugle was a-blowing[00:02:10]
Til the enemy was defeated[00:02:12]
And they ran with all their might[00:02:14]
From the brave young men[00:02:16]
With a letter in his hand[00:02:17]
And a carbine in his right[00:02:18]
Well johnny is a hero[00:02:20]
Johnny is a hero[00:02:21]
The regiment did claim[00:02:22]
Cause he led the way[00:02:24]
And he saved the day[00:02:25]
And he won for him this fame[00:02:26]
Of a soldier without equal[00:02:28]
In the us infantry[00:02:30]
And it's men like johnny willow[00:02:32]
That keep our country free[00:02:34]
