Esther

Esther - Phish[00:00:00]

It was late one fall night at a fairground near town[00:02:23]

When Esther first saw the Armenian man[00:02:26]

Who groveled toward her and stood by her side[00:02:30]

With a bucket that swung in his hand[00:02:33]

His grin stretched the folds of his pasty white cheeks[00:02:36]

And his lips hurled a dollop of murk on the curb[00:02:40]

And the lights from the rides showed a mischievous sparkle[00:02:43]

That flashed in his hollow eyed stare[00:02:47]

He said little girl you can chop off my legs[00:02:50]

And then peel off my socks if you want to[00:02:54]

But ID rather you took this old puppet from me[00:02:57]

That I hold in my pail as we speak[00:03:00]

And he stood looking down at the innocent girl[00:03:04]

And she stared at the bucket bewildered[00:03:07]

Til he lifted the doll for the young girl to see[00:03:11]

And a giant smile grew on his face[00:03:14]

She saw the dolls eyes and she couldn't resist[00:03:18]

And she thanked the man quickly and ran to the church[00:03:21]

And she burst through the door with puppet held high[00:03:25]

And a hush filled the chapel and the people looked mean[00:03:28]

Esther tried in vain to pacify the mob[00:03:53]

Quibble grew to spat to wrangle then to brawl[00:03:58]

The frenzied congregation struggled desperately to fetch[00:04:02]

The pretty puppet snugly nestled deep in Esther leather sack[00:04:06]

Through the window of the church a storm began to rage[00:04:14]

And Esther knew the time had come to flee[00:04:17]

She scurried down the aisle toward the doorway in the distance[00:04:21]

And out into the rainstorm where she felt she would be free[00:04:25]

But the wind was blowing harder[00:04:29]

And her skirt began to billow[00:04:31]

Until finally her feet began to lift[00:04:33]

And she rose above the houses and the people[00:04:37]

And the chimneys[00:04:41]

And Esther and the doll were set adrift[00:04:42]

Floating higher over the hills and the valleys and treetops[00:04:46]

They'd flutter and glide[00:04:52]

Soaring and turning suspended on air[00:04:54]

With the earth far below them they'd tumble[00:04:58]

And dive through the clouds[00:05:01]

And she began to plummet earthward till she[00:07:13]

Landed in the nasty part of town[00:07:16]

She glanced about the village sure to find the evil men[00:07:25]

Who rob and pillage in the darkest hour of night[00:07:29]

Nervously she fumbled for the pouch that held the[00:07:34]

Puppet on her rump[00:07:37]

Feeling quite outnumbered Esther hid behind[00:07:42]

A nearby pile of lumber where she waited[00:07:45]

Till the dawn[00:07:47]

Cause it would have been a blunder to[00:07:49]

Succumb to a hoodlum on the prowl[00:07:51]

When the morning came she wandered through the streets[00:08:06]

Along the chilly lake that lay beside the town[00:08:10]

At last a peaceful moment but she thought she heard a sound[00:08:14]

It was an angry mob of joggers coming up to knock her down[00:08:18]

As Esther stood and shook her head[00:08:25]

The joggers were approaching[00:08:27]

And she knew she had no choice left but to swim[00:08:29]

As the frosty water sank[00:08:33]

It's bitter teeth into her hide[00:08:34]

She tried to slide the heavy clothing from her skin[00:08:36]

Naked now she made her way toward the shore[00:08:41]

When suddenly she felt a tiny tugging at her toe[00:08:44]

And the puppet she'd forgotten wrapped[00:08:49]

It's tiny[00:08:51]

Little arms around her ankle and wouldn't let her go[00:08:52]

The waves seemed to open and swallow her whole[00:08:57]

As the doll pulled her down through the eerie green deep[00:09:01]

And the sound of the laughing old man filled her ears[00:09:05]

As she drifted away to a tranquil[00:09:09]

And motionless sleep[00:09:12]
