St. Nick’s Groove

St. Nick's Groove (LP版) - Nicole Mullen[00:00:00]

You know, lots of people[00:00:15]

Think that St. Nicholas is[00:00:16]

Just another name for Santa Claus.[00:00:17]

But Santa is also called Father Christmas,[00:00:18]

Kris Kringle, and some other names.[00:00:21]

But behind all of these names is a boy[00:00:25]

Who lived in what is now western Turkey[00:00:30]

About 1700 years ago.[00:00:32]

His name was Nicholas.[00:00:33]

Now when Nicholas was a little boy[00:00:34]

, a plague struck his home town[00:00:37]

And both his parents got sick and they died.[00:00:39]

He went to live with his uncle[00:00:42]

Who was a monk in a monastery,[00:00:44]

Who taught him all about God and Jesus.[00:00:47]

Now when Nicholas' parents died,[00:00:48]

They left him all of their money.[00:00:50]

But monks are supposed to be poor,[00:00:52]

So Nicholas resolved to give it all away,[00:00:55]

Especially to other children in trouble.[00:00:59]

There's a wonderful story about three girls who cold[00:01:00]

Not get married because they had no dowries.[00:01:04]

Now in those days a girl had to have[00:01:09]

A big sum of money,[00:01:11]

Or a dowry, if she was to marry.[00:01:13]

If she didn't, she'd be sold as a slave.[00:01:15]

Nicholas heard of this and he came up with a plan.[00:01:18]

Late at night he tossed a stocking full of gold coins[00:01:22]

Through the bedroom window of the oldest daughter.[00:01:27]

Soon she married a good husband.[00:01:31]

She said she had the dowry hidden away in her sock.[00:01:33]

Nicholas again tossed a sock full of money through[00:01:35]

The window of the second daughter.[00:01:40]

She, too, soon married.[00:01:42]

But when Nicholas crept up to the house with the third[00:01:43]

Full of money for the third daughter, he found[00:01:47]

All of the windows were shut.[00:01:49]

So he did what boys sometimes do.[00:01:52]

He climbed up on the roof and he dropped[00:01:56]

It down the chimney and it landed in the girl's shoes,[00:02:00]

Which were beside the hearth.[00:02:06]

When she, too,[00:02:09]

Married claiming that her dowry was in her shoes,[00:02:09]

People were amazed, and they said to one another,[00:02:10]

"It's some kind of miracle."[00:02:10]

St. Nicholas was an orphan boy[00:02:14]

Who became a priest and then a bishop,[00:02:17]

Who loved Jesus and God and gave away[00:02:19]

All of his wealth to the poor,[00:02:21]

And especially to children in trouble.[00:02:22]
