Assemble All Ye Maidens - Imogen Holst/English Chamber Orchestra (英国室内乐团)/The Purcell Singers/Susan Longfield[00:00:00]
Written by:Gustav Holst[00:00:01]
Assemble all ye maidens at the door[00:00:02]
And all ye loves assemble far and wide[00:00:07]
Proclaim the bridal that proclaimed before[00:00:14]
Has been deferred to this late eventide[00:00:20]
For on this night the bride[00:00:29]
The days of her betrothal over[00:00:32]
Leaves the parental hearth for evermore[00:00:36]
To night the bride goes forth to meet her lover[00:00:42]
Reach down the wedding vesture that has lain[00:00:54]
Yet all unvisited the silken gown[00:00:59]
Bring out the bracelets and the golden chain[00:01:03]
Her dearer friends provided sere and brown[00:01:09]
Bring out the festal crown[00:01:16]
And set it on her forehead lightly[00:01:19]
Though it be withered twine no wreath again[00:01:25]
This only is the crown she can wear rightly[00:01:32]
Cloak her in ermine for the night is cold[00:01:43]
And wrap her warmly for the night is long[00:01:51]
In pious hands the flaming torches hold[00:01:58]
While her attendants chosen from among[00:02:04]
Her faithful virgin throng[00:02:10]
May lay her in her cedar litter[00:02:15]
Decking her coverlet with sprigs of gold[00:02:20]
Roses and lilies white that best befit her[00:02:24]
Sound flute and tabor that the bridal be[00:02:36]
Not without music nor with these alone[00:02:43]
But let the viol lead the melody[00:02:52]
With lesser intervals and plaintive moan[00:02:59]
Of sinking semitone[00:03:06]
And all in choir the virgin voices[00:03:11]
Rest not from singing in skilled harmony[00:03:21]
The song that aye the bridegroom's ear rejoices[00:03:29]
Let the priests go before arrayed in white[00:03:44]
And let the dark stoled minstrels follow slow[00:03:52]
Next they that bear her honoured on this night[00:04:05]
And then the maidens in a double row[00:04:16]
Each singing soft and low[00:04:24]
And each on high a torch upstaying[00:04:30]
Unto her lover lead her forth with light[00:04:43]
With music and with singing and with praying[00:04:52]
'Twas at this sheltering hour he nightly came[00:05:07]
And found her trusty window open wide[00:05:11]
And knew the signal of the timorous flame[00:05:15]
That long the restless curtain would not hide[00:05:20]
Her form that stood beside[00:05:24]
As scarce she dared to be delighted[00:05:29]
Listening to that sweet tale that is no shame[00:05:34]
To faithful lovers that their hearts have plighted[00:05:39]
But now for many days the dewy grass[00:05:50]
Has shown no markings of his feet at morn[00:05:55]
And watching she has seen no shadow pass[00:06:01]
The moonlit walk and heard no music borne[00:06:06]
Upon her ear forlorn[00:06:12]
In vain she has looked out to greet him[00:06:18]
He has not come he will not come alas[00:06:22]
So let us bear her out where she must meet him[00:06:29]
Now to the river bank the priests are come[00:06:48]
The bark is ready to receive its freight[00:06:57]
Let some prepare her place therein and some[00:07:04]
Embark the litter with its slender weight[00:07:12]
The rest stand by in state[00:07:19]
And sing her a safe passage over[00:07:28]
While she is oared across to her new home[00:07:36]
Into the arms of her expectant lover[00:07:48]
And thou o lover that art on the watch[00:08:01]
Where on the banks of the forgetful streams[00:08:10]
The pale indifferent ghosts wander and snatch[00:08:22]
The sweeter moments of their broken dreams[00:08:31]
Thou when the torchlight gleams[00:08:40]
When thou shalt see the slow procession[00:08:46]
And when thine ears the fitful music catch[00:08:54]
Rejoice for thou art near to thy possession[00:09:04]
