Soliloquy - Gordon MacRae/Shirley Jones/Robert Rounseville[00:00:00]
Written by:Richard Rodgers[00:00:01]
I wonder what he'll think of me[00:00:08]
I guess he'll call me the old man[00:00:11]
I guess he'll think I can lick[00:00:16]
Every other feller's father[00:00:18]
Well I can[00:00:21]
I bet that he'll turn out to be[00:00:26]
The spittin' image of his dad[00:00:30]
But he'll have more common sense[00:00:35]
Than his puddin headed father ever had[00:00:37]
I'll teach him to wrestle[00:00:43]
And dive through a wave[00:00:44]
When we go in the mornin's for our swim[00:00:45]
His mother can teach him[00:00:48]
The way to behave[00:00:49]
But she won't make a sissy out o' him[00:00:51]
Not him not my boy not bill[00:00:54]
Bill my boy bill[00:01:07]
I will see that he is named after me I[00:01:10]
Will[00:01:14]
My boy bill he'll be tall[00:01:16]
And tough as a tree will bill[00:01:18]
Like a tree he'll grow[00:01:23]
With his head held high[00:01:25]
And his feet planted firm on the ground[00:01:27]
And you won't see nobody dare to try[00:01:30]
To boss or toss him around[00:01:34]
No pot bellied baggy eyed bully[00:01:37]
Will boss him around[00:01:41]
I don't give a hang what he does[00:01:46]
As long as he does what he likes[00:01:48]
He can sit on his tail[00:01:50]
Or work on a rail[00:01:51]
With a hammer hammering spikes[00:01:52]
He can ferry a boat on a river[00:01:55]
Or peddle a pack on his back[00:01:57]
Or work up and down[00:01:59]
The streets of a town[00:02:00]
With a whip and a horse and a hack[00:02:01]
He can haul a scow along a canal[00:02:03]
Run a cow around a corral[00:02:07]
Or maybe bark for a carousel[00:02:11]
Of course it takes talent to do that well[00:02:16]
Aha ha ha ha[00:02:23]
He might be a champ of the heavyweights[00:02:25]
Or a feller that sells you glue[00:02:26]
Or president of the united states[00:02:28]
That'd be all right too[00:02:32]
His mother would like that[00:02:36]
But he wouldn't be president if he didn't wanna be[00:02:38]
Not bill[00:02:40]
My boy bill he'll be tall[00:02:42]
And as tough as a tree will bill[00:02:45]
Like a tree he'll grow[00:02:49]
With his head held high[00:02:51]
And his feet planted firm on the ground[00:02:53]
And you won't see nobody dare to try[00:02:57]
To boss him or toss him around[00:03:01]
No fat bottomed flabby faced[00:03:04]
Pot bellied baggy eyed bully[00:03:07]
Will boss him around[00:03:10]
And I'm hanged if he'll marry his boss' daughter[00:03:16]
A skinny lipped virgin with blood like water[00:03:19]
Who'll give him a peck[00:03:22]
And call it a kiss[00:03:23]
And look in his eyes through a lorgnette[00:03:24]
Hey why am I talkin' on like this[00:03:30]
My kid ain't even been born yet[00:03:34]
I can see him when he's seventeen or so[00:03:38]
And startin' to go with a girl[00:03:43]
I can give him lots of pointers very sound[00:03:48]
On the way to get 'round any girl[00:03:53]
I can tell him[00:04:00]
Wait a minute[00:04:03]
Could it be[00:04:05]
What the hell[00:04:07]
What if he is a girl[00:04:10]
What would I do with her[00:04:25]
What could I do for her[00:04:27]
A bum with no money[00:04:30]
You can have fun with a son[00:04:34]
But you gotta be a father to a girl[00:04:38]
She mightn't be so bad at that[00:04:50]
A kid with ribbons in her hair[00:04:55]
A kind o' sweet and petite[00:05:00]
Little tin type of her mother[00:05:03]
What a pair[00:05:07]
My little girl[00:05:16]
Pink and white[00:05:20]
As peaches and cream is she[00:05:22]
My little girl[00:05:27]
Is half again as bright[00:05:30]
As girls are meant to be[00:05:35]
Dozens of boys pursue her[00:05:42]
Many a likely lad does what he can to woo[00:05:47]
Her[00:05:56]
From her faithful dad[00:05:58]
She has a few[00:06:05]
Pink and white young fellers of two or three[00:06:08]
But my little girl[00:06:17]
Gets hungry every night and she comes home to me[00:06:20]
I got to get ready before she comes[00:06:41]
I got to make certain that she[00:06:45]
Won't be dragged up in slums[00:06:48]
With a lot o' bums like me[00:06:50]
She's got to be sheltered[00:06:57]
In a fair hand dressed[00:06:59]
In the best that money can buy[00:07:02]
I never knew how to get money[00:07:06]
But I'll try I'll try I'll try[00:07:10]
I'll go out and make it or steal it[00:07:16]
Or take it or die[00:07:21]
