A Bush Christening

A Bush Christening - Gavin Lockley/Tom Ferris/Rum Corps Orchestra/Brett Weymark[00:00:00]

On the outer Barcoo where the churches are few [00:00:11]

And men of religion are scanty [00:00:15]

On a road never cross'd 'cept by folk that are lost [00:00:18]

One Michael Magee had a shanty [00:00:21]

Now this Mike was the dad of a ten-year-old lad [00:00:27]

Plump healthy and stoutly conditioned;[00:00:30]

He was strong as the best but poor Mike had no rest[00:00:33]

For the youngster had never been christened [00:00:36]

And his wife used to cry[00:00:41]

If the darlin' should die[00:00:43]

Saint Peter would not recognise him[00:00:45]

But by luck he survived till a preacher arrived [00:00:47]

Who agreed straightaway to baptise him [00:00:51]

Now the artful young rogue while they held their collogue [00:01:00]

With his ear to the keyhole was listenin' [00:01:03]

And he muttered in fright while his features turned white [00:01:06]

What the divil and all is this christenin'[00:01:09]

He was none of your dolts he had seen them brand colts [00:01:13]

And it seemed to his small understanding [00:01:16]

If the man in the frock made him one of the flock [00:01:19]

It must mean something very like branding [00:01:22]

So away with a rush he set off for the bush [00:01:25]

While the tears in his eyelids they glistened[00:01:28]

'Tis outrageous says he to brand youngsters like me [00:01:31]

I'll be dashed if I'll stop to be christened[00:01:34]

Like a young native dog he ran into a log [00:01:37]

And his father with language uncivil [00:01:41]

Never heeding the praste cried aloud in his haste [00:01:43]

Come out and be christened you divil[00:01:47]

But he lay there as snug as a bug in a rug [00:01:50]

And his parents in vain might reprove him [00:01:55]

Till his reverence spoke he was fond of a joke[00:02:02]

I've a notion he says that'll move him [00:02:05]

Poke a stick up the log give the spalpeen a prog[00:02:08]

Poke him aisy-don't hurt him or maim him [00:02:11]

'Tis not long that he'll stand I've the water at hand [00:02:14]

As he rushes out this end I'll name him [00:02:17]

Here he comes and for shame you've forgotten the name[00:02:20]

Is it Patsy or Michael or Dinnis[00:02:23]

Here the youngster ran out and the priest gave a shout[00:02:27]

Take your chance anyhow wid[00:02:30]

Maginnis[00:02:32]

As the howling young cub ran away to the scrub[00:02:33]

Where he knew that pursuit would be risky [00:02:36]

The priest as he fled flung a flask at his head[00:02:39]

That was labelled[00:02:42]

Maginnis's Whisky[00:02:43]

And Maginnis Magee has been made a J P [00:02:47]

And the one thing he hates more than sin is[00:02:50]

To be asked by the folk who have heard of the joke [00:02:53]

How he came to be christened[00:02:56]

Maginnis[00:02:58]
