Utah Carroll - Arlo Guthrie (阿洛·古利)[00:00:00]
Written by:Arlo Guthrie[00:00:01]
So you ask me my kind friend[00:00:10]
Why I am sad and still[00:00:13]
And why my brow is darkened[00:00:17]
Like the clouds upon the hill[00:00:20]
Rein in your ponies closer[00:00:24]
And I'll tell you all a tale[00:00:27]
Of Utah Carroll partner[00:00:31]
And his last ride on the trail[00:00:35]
In a grave without a headstone[00:00:40]
Without a date or name[00:00:44]
My partner lies there silent[00:00:48]
In the land from which I came[00:00:51]
Long ago we rode together[00:00:55]
We'd ridden side by side[00:00:58]
I loved him like a brother[00:01:02]
And I wept when Utah died[00:01:05]
While riding up one morning[00:01:11]
And our work was almost done[00:01:14]
The cattle quickly started[00:01:19]
On a wild and maddening run[00:01:22]
The boss's little daughter[00:01:26]
Who was riding on that side[00:01:29]
Rushed in to stop the stampede[00:01:33]
It was there my partner died[00:01:36]
Lenore upon her pony[00:01:42]
Tried to turn the cattle right[00:01:46]
But her blanket slipped beneath her[00:01:49]
And she caught and held on tight[00:01:53]
When we all saw that red blanket[00:01:57]
Each cowboy held his breath[00:02:00]
For should her pony fail her[00:02:04]
None could save the girl from death[00:02:07]
When the cattle saw the blanket[00:02:13]
Almost dragging on the ground[00:02:17]
They were maddened in a moment[00:02:20]
And they charged with deafening sound[00:02:24]
The girl soon saw her danger[00:02:28]
And she turned her pony's face[00:02:31]
And bending in her saddle[00:02:35]
Tried the blanket to replace[00:02:38]
Just then she lost her balance[00:02:44]
In the front of that wild tide[00:02:47]
Carroll's voice controlled the round up[00:02:51]
Lie still Lenore he cried[00:02:55]
And then close up beside her[00:02:59]
Came Utah riding fast[00:03:02]
Little did the poor boy know[00:03:06]
The ride would be his last[00:03:09]
Full often from the saddle[00:03:15]
He had caught the trailing rope[00:03:18]
To pick her up at full speed[00:03:22]
Was now his only hope[00:03:26]
He swung low from his saddle[00:03:30]
To take her to his arm[00:03:33]
We thought that he'd succeeded[00:03:37]
That the girl was safe from harm[00:03:40]
But such a strain upon his saddle[00:03:46]
Had ne'er been put before[00:03:50]
And the cinches gave beneath him[00:03:53]
And he fell beside Lenore[00:03:56]
When the girl fell from her saddle[00:04:00]
She had dragged the blanket down[00:04:04]
It lay there close beside them[00:04:08]
Where they lay upon the ground[00:04:11]
Utah took the blanket[00:04:17]
And to Lenore he said[00:04:21]
Lie still and quickly running[00:04:24]
Waved the red thing o'er his head[00:04:27]
He turned the maddened cattle[00:04:32]
From Lenore his little friend[00:04:35]
And as the mighty herd rushed toward him[00:04:38]
He turned to met his end[00:04:42]
And as the herd came on him[00:04:48]
His weapon quickly drew[00:04:51]
He was bound to die defended[00:04:55]
As all brave cowboys do[00:04:59]
The weapon flashed like lightning[00:05:02]
And it sounded loud and clear[00:05:05]
As the cattle rushed and killed him[00:05:09]
He dropped the leading steer[00:05:13]
When I broke through that wide circle[00:05:18]
To where poor Utah lay[00:05:22]
With a thousand wounds and bruises[00:05:26]
His life blood ebbed away[00:05:30]
I knelt down close beside him[00:05:33]
And I knew that all was o'er[00:05:36]
As I heard him faintly whisper[00:05:40]
Good-bye my sweet Lenore[00:05:44]
Next morning at the churchyard[00:05:50]
I heard the preacher say[00:05:53]
Don't think our kind friend Utah[00:05:57]
Was lost on that great day[00:06:00]
He was a much-loved cowboy[00:06:04]
And not afraid to die[00:06:08]
And we'll meet him at the round up[00:06:11]
On the plains beyond the sky[00:06:15]
So you ask me my kind friend[00:06:21]
Why I am sad and still[00:06:24]
And why my brow is darkened[00:06:28]
Like the clouds upon the hill[00:06:31]
Rein in your ponies closer[00:06:35]
And I'll tell you all a tale[00:06:38]
Of Utah Carroll partner[00:06:42]
And his last ride on the trail[00:06:46]
