Ballads of the Bush: A Bush Christening

3. A Bush Christening - Gavin Lockley/Sharolyn Kimmorley/Sonja Schebeck/Paul Laszlo[00:00:00]

Written by:Gavin Lockley/Banjo Patterson[00:00:07]

On the outer Barcoo where the churches are few[00:00:14]

And men of religion are scanty[00:00:17]

On a road never cross'd 'cept by folk that are lost[00:00:20]

OneMichael Magee had a shanty[00:00:23]

Now this Mike was the dad of a ten-year-old lad[00:00:28]

Plump healthy and stoutly conditioned[00:00:32]

He was strong as the best but poor Mike had no rest[00:00:34]

For the youngster had never been christened[00:00:37]

And his wife used to cry if the darlin' should die[00:00:42]

Saint Peter would not recognise him[00:00:45]

But by luck he survived till a preacher arrived[00:00:48]

Who agreed straightaway to baptise him[00:00:51]

Now the artful young rogue while they held their collogue[00:00:59]

With his ear to the keyhole was listenin'[00:01:03]

And he muttered in fright while his features turned white[00:01:05]

What the divil and all is this christenin'[00:01:08]

He was none of your dolts he had seen them brand colts[00:01:11]

And it seemed to his small understanding[00:01:13]

If the man in the frock made him one of the flock[00:01:16]

It must mean something very like branding[00:01:19]

So away with a rush he set off for the bush[00:01:22]

While the tears in his eyelids they glistened[00:01:25]

'Tis outrageous says he to brand youngsters like me[00:01:28]

I'll be dashed if I'll stop to be christened[00:01:31]

Like a young native dog he ran into a log[00:01:33]

And his father with language uncivil[00:01:36]

Never heeding the praste cried aloud in his haste[00:01:39]

Come out and be christened you divil[00:01:42]

But he lay there as snug as a bug in a rug[00:01:45]

And his parents in vain might reprove him[00:01:50]

Till his reverence spoke he was fond of a joke[00:01:55]

I've a notion says he that'll move him[00:01:59]

Poke a stick up the log give the spalpeen a prog[00:02:01]

Poke him aisy-don't hurt him or maim him[00:02:04]

'Tis not long that he'll stand I've the water at hand[00:02:07]

As he rushes out this end I'll name him[00:02:10]

Here he comes and for shame ye've forgotten the name[00:02:13]

Is it Patsy or Michael or Dinnis[00:02:16]

Here the youngster ran out and the priest gave a shout[00:02:19]

Take your chance anyhow wid 'Maginnis'[00:02:21]

As the howling young cub ran away to the scrub[00:02:25]

Where he knew that pursuit would be risky[00:02:28]

The priest as he fled flung a flask at his head[00:02:31]

That was labelled Maginnis's Whisky[00:02:34]

And Maginnis Magee has been made a J.P[00:02:38]

And the one thing he hates more than sin is[00:02:42]

To be asked by the folk who have heard of the joke[00:02:44]

How he came to be christened Maginnis[00:02:47]
