There Were Roses - John Whelan[00:00:00]
Composed by:Tommy Sands[00:00:01]
Produced by:John Whelan/Michael Sullivan[00:00:01]
My song for you this evening[00:00:06]
It's not to make you sad[00:00:09]
Nor for adding to the sorrows of[00:00:12]
A troubled Northern land[00:00:15]
But lately I been thinking[00:00:19]
And it just won't leave my mind[00:00:21]
I'll tell you of two friends[00:00:25]
One time were both good friends of mine[00:00:27]
Isaac Scott from Benny[00:00:33]
He lived just across the field[00:00:35]
A great man for the music and the[00:00:39]
Dancing and the reels[00:00:42]
MacDonald came from South Armagh[00:00:45]
To court young Agnes fair[00:00:48]
It's then we'd meet on Ryan Road[00:00:51]
And laughter filled the air[00:00:54]
Now Isaac he was Protestant[00:01:05]
And Sean was Catholic born[00:01:09]
But it never made a difference[00:01:12]
For the friendship it was strong[00:01:15]
And sometimes in the evening[00:01:18]
When we heard the sound of drums[00:01:21]
We said War won't divide us[00:01:24]
We always will be one[00:01:27]
For the land our fathers plow in[00:01:32]
The soil it is the same[00:01:35]
And the places where we say our[00:01:38]
Prayers have just got different[00:01:41]
Names[00:01:43]
We talked about the friends who'd died[00:01:44]
We hoped there'd be no more[00:01:47]
It was little then we realized the tragedy in store[00:01:51]
And there were roses roses[00:01:58]
There were roses[00:02:04]
And the tears of the people ran together[00:02:09]
It was on a Sunday morning when[00:02:21]
The awful news came around[00:02:24]
Another killing had been done[00:02:27]
Just outside Caplan town[00:02:30]
We knew that Isaac danced up there[00:02:33]
We knew he liked the band[00:02:36]
When we heard that he was dead[00:02:39]
And we just could not understand[00:02:42]
We gathered at the graveside on[00:02:47]
A cold and rainy day[00:02:50]
The minister just closed his eyes[00:02:54]
And for no revenge he prayed[00:02:57]
And all of us who knew him from along the Ryan Road[00:03:00]
We bowed our heads and said[00:03:06]
A prayer for the resting of his soul[00:03:08]
And there were roses roses[00:03:13]
There were roses[00:03:20]
And the tears of the people ran together[00:03:24]
Now fear it filled the countryside[00:03:45]
There was fear in every home[00:03:49]
And late at night a car came[00:03:52]
Prowling round the Ryan Road[00:03:55]
A Catholic would be killed tonight[00:03:59]
To even up the score[00:04:01]
Ah Christ it's young MacDonald[00:04:04]
That they've taken from the door[00:04:07]
Isaac was my friend he cried[00:04:13]
He begged them with his fear[00:04:15]
But centuries of hatred have ears that cannot hear[00:04:18]
An eye for an eye it was all that filled their minds[00:04:25]
And another eye for another eye[00:04:31]
'Til everyone is blind[00:04:34]
And there were roses roses[00:04:38]
There were roses[00:04:45]
And the tears of the people ran together[00:04:49]
Now I don't know where the moral is[00:05:01]
Or how this song should end[00:05:04]
But I wonder just how many wars[00:05:07]
Are fought between good friends[00:05:11]
And those who give the orders[00:05:14]
They are not the ones to die[00:05:16]
It's Scott and MacDonald and the likes of you and I[00:05:19]
And there were roses roses[00:05:27]
There were roses[00:05:33]
And the tears of the people ran together[00:05:38]
And there were roses roses[00:05:42]
