It was late one fall night at a fairground near town[00:09:48]
When Esther first saw the Armenian man[00:09:48]
Who groveled toward her and stood by her side[00:09:48]
With a bucket that swung in his hand[00:09:48]
His grin stretched the folds of his pasty white cheeks[00:09:48]
And his lips hurled a dollop of murk on the curb[00:09:48]
And the lights from the rides showed a mischievous sparkle[00:09:48]
That flashed in his hollow eyed stare[00:09:48]
He said Ł˘Little girl you can chop off my legs[00:09:48]
And then peel off my socks if you want to[00:09:48]
But I'd rather you took this old puppet from me[00:09:48]
That I hold in my pail as we speak Ł˘[00:09:48]
And he stood looking down at the innocent girl[00:09:48]
And she stared at the bucket bewildered[00:09:48]
'Til he lifted the doll for the young girl to see[00:09:48]
And a giant smile grew on his face[00:09:48]
She saw the doll's eyes and she couldn't resist[00:09:48]
And she thanked the man quickly and ran to the church[00:09:48]
And she burst through the door with puppet held high[00:09:48]
And a hush filled the chapel and the people looked mean[00:09:48]
Esther tried in vain to pacify the mob[00:09:48]
Quibble grew to spat to wrangle then to brawl[00:09:48]
The frenzied congregation struggled desperately to fetch[00:09:48]
The pretty puppet snugly nestled deep in Esther's leather sack[00:09:48]
Through the window of the church a storm began to rage[00:09:48]
And Esther knew the time had come to flee[00:09:48]
She scurried down the aisle toward the doorway in the distance[00:09:48]
And out into the rainstorm where she felt she would be free[00:09:48]
But the wind was blowing harder[00:09:48]
And her skirt began to billow[00:09:48]
Until finally her feet began to lift[00:09:48]
And she rose above the people and the houses[00:09:48]
And the chimneys[00:09:48]
And Esther and the doll were set adrift[00:09:48]
Floating higher over the hills and the valleys and treetops[00:09:48]
They'd flutter and glide[00:09:48]
Soaring and turning suspended on air[00:09:48]
With the earth far below them they'd tumble[00:09:48]
And dive through the clouds[00:09:48]
And she began to plummet earthward till she[00:09:48]
Landed in the nasty part of town[00:09:48]
She glanced about the village sure to find the evil men[00:09:48]
Who rob and pillage in the darkest hour of night[00:09:48]
Nervously she fumbled for the pouch that held the[00:09:48]
Puppet on her rump[00:09:48]
Feeling quite outnumbered Esther hid behind[00:09:48]
A nearby pile of lumber where she waited[00:09:48]
Till the dawn[00:09:48]
Cause it would have been a blunder to[00:09:48]
Succumb to a hoodlum on the prowl[00:09:48]
When the morning came she wandered through the streets[00:09:48]
Along the chilly lake that lay beside the town[00:09:48]
At last a peaceful moment but she thought she heard a sound[00:09:48]
It was an angry mob of joggers coming up to knock her down[00:09:48]
As Esther stood and shook her head[00:09:48]
The joggers were approaching[00:09:48]
And she knew she had no choice left but to swim[00:09:48]
As the frosty water sank its bitter teeth into her hide[00:09:48]
She tried to slide the heavy clothing from her skin[00:09:48]
Naked now she made her way toward the shore[00:09:48]
When suddenly she felt a tiny tugging at her toe[00:09:48]
And the puppet she'd forgotten wrapped its tiny[00:09:48]
Little arms around her ankle and wouldn't let her go[00:09:48]
The waves seemed to open and swallow her whole[00:09:48]
As the doll pulled her down through the eerie green deep[00:09:48]
And the sound of the laughing old man filled her ears[00:09:48]
As she drifted away to a tranquil[00:09:48]
And motionless sleep[00:09:48]
