The Funeral

Let me tell you about a man Tommy Collins[00:00:00]

A veteran in country music[00:00:05]

Who interrputed his career by his own choice[00:00:07]

To become a minister and by the way[00:00:11]

I understand he was very successful[00:00:14]

And during this period of his life[00:00:17]

Tommy pasteured a small Baptist church[00:00:19]

In the very small town of Lincoln California [00:00:22]

And it was during this time[00:00:27]

That he was called upon to speak at a funeral[00:00:29]

And the poem I want to recite[00:00:32]

For you now is a true experience of Tommy's[00:00:34]

And it's simply called The Funeral [00:00:38]

A funeral is always a saddening thing[00:00:52]

For everybody is somebody to someone[00:00:56]

But some funeral scenes chill you to the bone[00:01:01]

And one day in our town we had one [00:01:05]

A very young mother had died[00:01:09]

Something that you just don't expect[00:01:10]

And the shops and stores had[00:01:13]

All closed their doors[00:01:16]

They did it out of love and respect [00:01:19]

And in the crowded funeral home that day[00:01:23]

With everyone present weeping[00:01:25]

The sound of a little girl's voice was heard[00:01:28]

She said That's my mommie [00:01:31]

She's sleeping [00:01:33]

Then I heard the sound of[00:01:36]

Her little feet tap tap tap[00:01:37]

As she made her way down the aisle[00:01:42]

Her little purse dangled from her tiny wrist[00:01:45]

And it brushed her best Sunday dress[00:01:48]

And she boldly asserted the confidence[00:01:51]

That little folks like her possess [00:01:54]

To the life that has no final chapter[00:01:57]

There's no ending and no last mile[00:02:00]

The preacher and the rest were petrified[00:02:04]

But on the little girl's face was a smile [00:02:08]

She said wake up mommie wake up[00:02:12]

And still not satisfied[00:02:16]

She reached out with her little hand[00:02:18]

And touched her face and cried[00:02:20]

Then the broken hearted daddy spoke[00:02:25]

With a gentleness and with power[00:02:27]

And the words that issued from his lips[00:02:31]

Was the sermon for the hour [00:02:33]

In a child like faith he told her[00:02:38]

That the dead in Christ will rise[00:02:41]

God gave us his word he said[00:02:46]

And we know he never lies [00:02:49]

We can't wake up our sleeping mommie[00:02:53]

But we know someone who can[00:02:57]

Baby only God can wake up mommie[00:03:02]

Let's go home and leave her in his hands[00:03:08]
