Dear Mister President - The Almanac Singers[00:00:00]
Dear Mr President I set me down[00:00:09]
To send you greetings from my home town[00:00:11]
And send you best wishes[00:00:13]
From all the friends I know[00:00:14]
In Texas Alabama Ohio[00:00:16]
And affiliated places[00:00:18]
I'm an ordinary guy worked most of my life[00:00:21]
Sometime I'll settle down with my kids and wife[00:00:23]
And I like to see a movie or take a little drink[00:00:25]
I like being free to say what I think[00:00:27]
Sort of runs in the family[00:00:29]
My grandpa crossed the ocean[00:00:32]
For the same reason[00:00:33]
Now I hate Hitler and I can tell you why[00:00:36]
He's caused lots of good[00:00:38]
Folks to suffer and die[00:00:39]
He's got a way of shoving folks around[00:00:40]
I figure it's about time we[00:00:42]
Slapped him down[00:00:44]
Give him a dose of his own medicine[00:00:44]
Lead poisoning[00:00:47]
Now Mr President[00:00:50]
We haven't always agreed in the past I know[00:00:51]
But that ain't at all important now[00:00:54]
What is important is what we got to do[00:00:56]
We got to lick Mr Hitler and until we do[00:00:57]
Other things can wait[00:01:00]
In other words first we got a skunk to skin[00:01:03]
War means overtime and higher prices[00:01:07]
But we're all willing to make sacrifices[00:01:09]
Hell I'd even stop fighting[00:01:10]
With my mother in law[00:01:12]
Cause we need her too[00:01:13]
To win the war old battle ax[00:01:14]
Now as I think of our great land[00:01:18]
Of the cities and towns and farming land[00:01:20]
There's so many good people[00:01:21]
Working every day[00:01:23]
I know it ain't perfect but it[00:01:24]
Will be some day[00:01:25]
Just give us a little time[00:01:26]
This is the reason that I want to fight[00:01:28]
Not because every thing's[00:01:30]
Perfect or every thing's right[00:01:31]
No it's just the opposite [00:01:32]
I'm fighting because I want[00:01:34]
A better America with better laws[00:01:35]
And better homes and jobs and schools[00:01:37]
And no more Jim Crow and no more rules[00:01:39]
Like you can't ride on this train[00:01:42]
Cause you're a Negro[00:01:44]
You can't live here cause you're a Jew[00:01:46]
You can't work here cause you're a union man[00:01:49]
There's a line keeps running[00:01:53]
Through my head[00:01:54]
I think it was something Joe Louis once said[00:01:55]
Said There's lots of things wrong[00:01:58]
But Hitler won't help them[00:01:59]
Now Mr President[00:02:03]
You're commander in chief of our armed forces[00:02:04]
Ships and planes and the tanks and horses[00:02:06]
I guess you know best just where I can fight[00:02:08]
All I want to be is situated right[00:02:11]
To do the most damage[00:02:12]
I never was one to try and shirk[00:02:15]
And let the other fellow do all the work[00:02:17]
So when the time comes I'll be on hand[00:02:19]
And make good use of these two hands[00:02:21]
Quit playing this banjo around with the boys[00:02:24]
And exchange it for something[00:02:26]
That makes more noise[00:02:27]
So Mr President [00:02:30]
We've got this one big job to do[00:02:32]
That's lick Mr Hitler and when we're through[00:02:34]
Let no one else ever take his place[00:02:36]
To trample down the human race[00:02:38]
So what I want is you to give me a gun[00:02:41]
So we can hurry up and get the job done[00:02:43]
