At major college or high school sports events, cheerleaders, [00:00:00]
both male and female, jump and dance in front of the crowd, [00:00:04]
and shout the name of their team, running around and yelling [00:00:08]
"Go, team, Go". [00:00:12]
The first cheerleader ever was a man. [00:00:14]
In 1898, John Campbell jumped in front of the crowd at the [00:00:17]
University of Minnesota and shouted for his team. [00:00:21]
He shouted "Hoorah, Minnesota". [00:00:26]
This was the first organized shout, or yell. [00:00:29]
For the next 32 years cheerleaders were men only. [00:00:33]
Cheerleading is not just about cheering. [00:00:38]
They practice special shouts, dances, and athletic shows. [00:00:40]
The men throw the women high in the air and catch them. [00:00:45]
The team members climb on each other's shoulders to make [00:00:49]
a human pyramid. [00:00:52]
They yell and dance, too. [00:00:54]
It is like human fireworks. [00:00:56]
Of course, they may often suffer serious knee and wrist [00:00:58]
injuries, and bloody noses. [00:01:02]
Cheerleaders have their own contests every year at local, [00:01:05]
state and national levels. [00:01:09]
And the crowd shouts for them. [00:01:12]
It is not fair to think cheerleading is just being cheerful [00:01:14]
and lively and having a loud voice. [00:01:17]
Cheerleading is a sport in itself. [00:01:21]
