Back When I Was 4 - Jeffrey Lewis/Jack Lewis/Anders Griffen[00:00:00]
Back when I was 4 and I knew the[00:00:01]
Name of every dinosaur[00:00:03]
I knew how to read ROM comic books[00:00:04]
My babysitter said I was really smart[00:00:06]
When the lights went out everything changed[00:00:08]
The radio music made me feel strange[00:00:10]
And I had a real bad dream about[00:00:13]
A gorilla in the bathroom[00:00:14]
Back when I was 6 and[00:00:17]
I took some things real serious[00:00:18]
And I thought that every[00:00:20]
Song that came on the radio[00:00:22]
Was referring to strange sexual acts[00:00:24]
Because they thought I wouldn't know the facts[00:00:27]
And being small is hard and[00:00:29]
No one ever tells you how[00:00:31]
And back when I was 8 I[00:00:33]
Would sit outside on an old milk crate[00:00:35]
And look out at the world from[00:00:37]
The stoop across the street[00:00:39]
The boomboxes and the hot concrete[00:00:40]
And every Halloween they hung[00:00:43]
A million rubber skeletons across ninth street [00:00:45]
And back when I was 12 or so[00:00:49]
I swear to god I never felt so low[00:00:51]
Everyone but me was[00:00:53]
Making out and eating cookies[00:00:54]
I had more than my brain could stand[00:00:57]
I threw my life in a garbage can[00:00:59]
I felt so weird[00:01:01]
I had to disappear[00:01:02]
In crying suicide disease [00:01:02]
At 15 getting stoned felt good[00:01:05]
And it sent me back to childhood[00:01:07]
And nothing ever mattered to me more than that [00:01:09]
But then 16 became eclipse[00:01:12]
My brain became apocalypse[00:01:15]
I was lost and found and[00:01:16]
I've never been the same [00:01:18]
And back when I was 22[00:01:21]
I left the best thing that I knew[00:01:22]
And I gave it up for fortune and for fame[00:01:24]
I played like I didn't know how[00:01:29]
I shocked the world[00:01:30]
I wowed the crowd[00:01:32]
But I deserved more than what they gave[00:01:33]
Back when I was 27 still nothing had been forgiven[00:01:37]
Clay turns into rock and rock just sits[00:01:40]
So sitting on a crowded beach[00:01:45]
I'd pretend I was a leech[00:01:46]
And I'd stick to things here and there for a little bit[00:01:48]
And back when I was 31 I knew[00:01:53]
I'd become what I'd become[00:01:54]
Nothing left to reveal[00:01:56]
And there was nowhere else to turn[00:01:58]
So shocked and withered dumb and bitter[00:02:00]
And in need of a babysitter[00:02:02]
I'd gladly let my hand fall off and burn burn burn[00:02:04]
Back when I turned the big 4-0[00:02:09]
I realized just how much there was to go[00:02:11]
And I started to think that being alone forever[00:02:13]
Wasn't where it was at[00:02:15]
So I took my head out of the window[00:02:17]
And I taught myself how to love real fast[00:02:18]
I started talking about painting[00:02:20]
With a woman in the laundromat[00:02:22]
And back when I was 50[00:02:25]
And my first wife had just left me[00:02:26]
I felt okay and I sang my daughter[00:02:29]
Funny little songs[00:02:31]
And just when I thought the best was past[00:02:33]
I fell in love for real at last[00:02:35]
And it didn't even matter[00:02:37]
That it had taken me so long[00:02:38]
And back when I was 63 the public rediscovered me[00:02:41]
My comic books and albums had[00:02:44]
All become rare cult-collector items[00:02:46]
And both my parents were deceased[00:02:48]
So they didn't see my records get re-released[00:02:51]
And I got a dog for the first time in my life[00:02:53]
And back when I was 74 my[00:02:57]
Dog died and I got two more[00:02:59]
I still felt really good about my daughter[00:03:01]
And also about my girlfriend[00:03:03]
And I would sing and draw a little bit[00:03:05]
But mostly I'd just wake up early and sit[00:03:07]
And hang out with the puppies[00:03:09]
And wish that I could live forever[00:03:11]
And back when I was 87 and my[00:03:13]
Grandson had just turned eleven[00:03:15]
My woman was dead[00:03:17]
And my dogs were getting pretty old[00:03:18]
My body didn't work quite like it should[00:03:21]
But overall things were pretty good[00:03:23]
I was getting decent royalties[00:03:25]
From the reissued comic books and records[00:03:26]
And back when I was 106[00:03:29]
My only friend[00:03:34]
Was one goldfish[00:03:36]
Everyone I ever knew was dead and gone[00:03:40]
And the goldfish never had a name[00:03:47]
And the neighbors thought I was insane[00:03:51]
And I flushed it down the toilet when[00:03:56]
I saw it floating upside down[00:03:59]
And back when I was 128 I'd sit[00:04:04]
Outside on an old milk crate[00:04:06]
And look out at the world[00:04:09]
From the stoop across the street[00:04:10]
The boomboxes and the hot concrete[00:04:13]
And every Halloween they hung[00:04:15]
A million rubber skeletons across ninth street[00:04:16]
Every Halloween they hung[00:04:21]
A million rubber skeletons[00:04:22]
Every Halloween they hung[00:04:24]
A million rubber skeletons[00:04:26]
Every Halloween they hung[00:04:28]
A million rubber skeletons[00:04:30]
