Home from the Forest - Harlan Howard[00:00:00]
Written by:Gordon Lightfoot[00:00:01]
Oh the neon lights were flashing and the icy wind did blow[00:00:10]
The water seeped into his shoes and the drizzle turned to snow[00:00:16]
His eyes were red his hopes were dead and the wine was running low[00:00:22]
And the old man came home from the forest[00:00:28]
His tears fell on the sidewalk as he stumbled to the street[00:00:36]
A dozen faces stopped to stare but no one stopped to speak[00:00:42]
For his castle was a hallway and the bottle was his friend[00:00:47]
And the old man stumbled in from the forest[00:00:53]
Up a dark and dingy staircase the old man made his way[00:01:08]
His ragged coat around him as upon his cot he lay[00:01:14]
And he wondered how it happened that he'd ended up this way[00:01:20]
Getting lost like a fool in the forest[00:01:26]
And as he lay there sleeping a vision did appear[00:01:34]
Upon his mantle shining the face of one so dear[00:01:40]
Who'd loved him in the springtime of a long forgotten year[00:01:46]
When the wildflowers did bloom in the forest[00:01:52]
She touched his grizzled fingers as she called him by his name[00:02:07]
And then he heard the joyful sound of children at their games[00:02:13]
In an old house on a hillside in some forgotten town[00:02:19]
Where the river runs down from the forest[00:02:25]
With a mighty roar the big jet soars above the canyon streets[00:02:32]
And the con men con but life goes on for the city never sleeps[00:02:38]
But to an old forgotten soldier the dawn will come no more[00:02:44]
For the old man has come home from the forest[00:02:52]
