Phil the Fluter's Ball - Peter Dawson[00:00:00]
Written by:Traditional[00:00:01]
Have you heard of Phil the fluter[00:00:10]
From the town of Ballymuck[00:00:11]
The times was going hard for him[00:00:13]
In fact the man was broke[00:00:14]
So he sent an invitation[00:00:16]
To his neighbours one and all[00:00:17]
As how he'd like their company[00:00:18]
That evening at a ball[00:00:20]
And when writing out[00:00:21]
He was careful to suggest to them[00:00:22]
That if they found a hat of his[00:00:24]
Convenient to the door[00:00:25]
The more they put in[00:00:27]
Whenever he requested them[00:00:28]
The better would the music be[00:00:30]
For battering the floor[00:00:31]
With a toot on the flute[00:00:32]
And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh[00:00:33]
Hopping in the middle[00:00:35]
Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh[00:00:36]
Up down hands around[00:00:38]
And crossing to the wall[00:00:39]
Sure hadn't we the gaiety[00:00:41]
At Phil the Fluter's ball[00:00:42]
There was Mister Denis Doherty[00:00:49]
Who kept a running dog[00:00:50]
There was little crooked Paddy[00:00:51]
From the Tiraloughett bog[00:00:53]
There was boys from every barony[00:00:54]
And girls from every art[00:00:56]
And the beautiful Miss Bradys'[00:00:57]
In their private a** and cart[00:00:58]
Along with them[00:01:00]
Came bouncing Mrs Cafferty[00:01:01]
Little Mickey Mulligan[00:01:03]
Was also to the fore[00:01:04]
Rose Suzanne and Margaret O'Rafferty[00:01:05]
The flower of Ard Na Gullion[00:01:08]
And the pride of Petravore[00:01:10]
With a toot on the flute[00:01:11]
And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh[00:01:12]
Hopping in the middle[00:01:14]
Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh[00:01:15]
Up down hands around[00:01:17]
And crossing to the wall[00:01:18]
Sure hadn't we the gaiety[00:01:19]
At Phil the Fluter's ball[00:01:21]
First little Mickey Mulligan[00:01:27]
Got up to show them how[00:01:29]
And then the widow Cafferty[00:01:30]
Steps out and takes her bow[00:01:32]
I'll dance you off your legs says she[00:01:33]
As sure as you were born[00:01:34]
If you'll only make the piper play[00:01:36]
The Hare was in the Corn[00:01:37]
So Phil plays up[00:01:39]
To the best of his ability[00:01:40]
The ladies and the gentlemen[00:01:42]
Begin to do their share[00:01:43]
Faith then Mick[00:01:44]
It's you that has agility[00:01:46]
Begob an' Mrs Cafferty[00:01:47]
You're leppin' like a hare[00:01:48]
With a toot on the flute[00:01:50]
And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh[00:01:51]
Hopping in the middle[00:01:53]
Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh[00:01:54]
Up down hands around[00:01:56]
And crossing to the wall[00:01:57]
Sure hadn't we the gaiety[00:01:58]
At Phil the Fluter's ball[00:02:00]
Then Phil the fluter tipped a wink[00:02:06]
To little crooked Pat[00:02:08]
I think it's nearly time says he[00:02:09]
For passing round the hat[00:02:11]
So Paddy passed the caipin' round[00:02:12]
And looking very cute[00:02:14]
Said you have to pay the piper[00:02:15]
When he tootles on the flute[00:02:16]
Then all joined in[00:02:18]
With the greatest joviality[00:02:19]
Coverin' the buckle[00:02:21]
And the shuffle and the cut[00:02:22]
Jigs were danced[00:02:23]
Of the very finest quality[00:02:24]
But the widow bate the company[00:02:26]
At handlin' the foot[00:02:27]
With a toot on the flute[00:02:29]
And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh[00:02:30]
Hopping in the middle[00:02:32]
Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh[00:02:33]
Up down hands around[00:02:34]
And crossing to the wall[00:02:36]
Sure hadn't we the gaiety[00:02:37]
At Phil the Fluter's ball[00:02:39]
