The Bike - Amy Correia[00:00:00]
I became the heiress to a red and rusted bicycle[00:00:14]
Built like a tank from Sears Roebuck circa 1952[00:00:19]
It had been entrusted to me by my late great uncle Pat[00:00:24]
And I guess he didn't ride it much[00:00:29]
Both tires on the bike were flat[00:00:32]
Pat had died at Christmas time in 1991[00:00:39]
He had fallen off the wagon[00:00:44]
And he sunk into a Christmas funk[00:00:47]
My father he had found him[00:00:49]
Two days after he had died[00:00:52]
Well he drank himself to death one night[00:00:54]
In a little home he owned by the seaside[00:00:57]
Well I took the bike and I cleaned it up[00:00:59]
My father he patched up the tires[00:01:02]
Am I going to town or just spinning my wheels[00:01:04]
And when I die I wonder how it feels[00:01:07]
Hey and I'm riding around riding around on it[00:01:10]
Hey just riding around riding around on it[00:01:15]
Hey you know I'm riding around[00:01:20]
Riding around on it hey[00:01:24]
The funeral service was a few days later[00:01:30]
At a place down the street from where he had lived[00:01:32]
There wasn't a hell of a turn out[00:01:35]
He had never married and he never had kids[00:01:37]
The coffin lid was open[00:01:40]
Pat was lying inside[00:01:42]
His sister had a picture of a poodle named Pepper[00:01:45]
She put it in his hand and then she cried[00:01:47]
Now I'm riding around in the city[00:01:55]
Through the smog and the summer heat[00:01:57]
And I'm blowing through all the red lights[00:02:00]
I guess you could say I'm feeling lucky[00:02:02]
And the taxis and the trucks[00:02:05]
Everybody's blowin' their horns[00:02:07]
And I got a bicycle bell to ring[00:02:10]
And I got a notion to sing as I'm riding along[00:02:13]
Hey and I'm riding around riding around on it[00:02:16]
Hey just riding around riding around on it[00:02:21]
Hey you know I'm riding around[00:02:26]
Riding around on it hey[00:02:29]
Tudududududu[00:02:36]
Tudududududu tudududududu tudududududu[00:02:38]
Tudududududu tudududududu tudududududu[00:02:43]
Tududududu tudutudu[00:02:48]
Well I didn't even really know him at all[00:02:52]
And I wonder can he see me[00:02:56]
As I'm riding along[00:03:00]
Riding along hey[00:03:03]
The day that Pat was buried[00:03:16]
The air was cold and clear[00:03:18]
And we drove out to the cemetery[00:03:21]
And snow flew around in the air[00:03:24]
And a hired man from the State[00:03:26]
He played taps on a coronet[00:03:28]
And a flag was presented to his sister[00:03:31]
For time in the service that Pat had spent[00:03:34]
When he used to ride on the bike[00:03:36]
Way back in 52[00:03:38]
He was starting out a life[00:03:41]
And the bike it was brand new[00:03:43]
And life was laid before him like[00:03:46]
A platter before a king[00:03:49]
He was young and he was handsome[00:03:51]
And the world was alive with meaning hey hey[00:03:54]
And the world was alive with meaning hey[00:03:59]
And I'm riding around riding around on it hey[00:04:04]
Just riding around riding around on it hey[00:04:09]
You know I'm riding around[00:04:14]
Riding around on it hey[00:04:15]
Just riding around riding around on it[00:04:19]
Hey I'm riding around[00:04:22]
Riding around on it[00:04:25]
Hey I'm riding around[00:04:27]
Riding around on it[00:04:30]
Hey I'm riding around[00:04:32]
Riding around on it[00:04:35]
Hey I'm riding around[00:04:37]
Riding around on it hey[00:04:41]
I'm riding around[00:04:44]
Riding around[00:04:46]
