Anne Braden(Album Version)

Anne Braden (Album Version) - Flobots[00:00:00]

What Ive realized since is[00:00:00]

That it is a very painful process[00:00:01]

But it is not destructive[00:00:03]

Its the world deliberation[00:00:05]

That what really happened in the '60s[00:00:07]

Was that this country took just the first step[00:00:09]

Toward admittin that it had been wrong on race[00:00:11]

And creativity burst out in all directions[00:00:15]

From the color of the faces in Sunday songs[00:00:18]

To the hatred they raised all the youngsters on[00:00:20]

Once upon a time in this country long ago[00:00:22]

She knew there was somethin wrong[00:00:24]

Because the song said yellow red black and white[00:00:26]

Everyone precious in the path of Christ[00:00:28]

But what about the daughter of the woman cleanin their house[00:00:30]

Wasnt she a child they were singin about [00:00:32]

And if Jesus loves us black and white skin[00:00:34]

Why didn't her white mother invite them in [00:00:36]

When did it become a room for no blacks to step in [00:00:38]

How did she already know not to ask the question [00:00:40]

Left lastin impressions[00:00:42]

Adolescences comforts gone[00:00:44]

She never thought things would ever change[00:00:46]

But she always knew there was somethin wrong[00:00:48]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:00:50]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:00:58]

Years later she found herself Mississippi bound[00:01:06]

To help stop the legalized lynchin of Mr Willie McGee[00:01:10]

But they couldnt stop it so they thought[00:01:14]

That theyd talk to the governor about what happened and say[00:01:16]

Were tired of bein used as an excuse to kill black men[00:01:18]

But the cops wouldnt let em past[00:01:22]

And these women they struck em as uppity[00:01:24]

So they hauled em all off to jail[00:01:26]

And they called it protective custody[00:01:28]

Then from her cell she heard her jailers grumblin about outsiders[00:01:30]

When she called him out and said she was from the South[00:01:34]

They shouted Why is a nice Southern lady[00:01:37]

Makin trouble for the governor [00:01:39]

She said I guess I'm not your type of lady[00:01:41]

And I guess I'm not your type of Southerner[00:01:44]

But before you call me traitor well its plainest just to say[00:01:46]

I was a child in Mississippi but I'm ashamed of it today[00:01:49]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:01:54]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:02:02]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:02:10]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:02:18]

And all of a sudden I realized that I was on the other side[00:02:23]

Imagine the world that youre standin within[00:02:26]

All of your neighbors and family friends[00:02:28]

How would you cope facin the fact[00:02:30]

The flesh on their hands was tainted with sin [00:02:31]

She faced this every day[00:02:34]

In people she saw on a regular basis[00:02:36]

People she loved in several cases[00:02:37]

People she knew were incredibly racist[00:02:39]

It was painful but she never stopped lovin them[00:02:41]

Never stopped callin their names[00:02:44]

And she never stopped bein a Southern woman[00:02:46]

And she never stopped fightin for change[00:02:48]

And she saw that her struggle was in the tradition[00:02:50]

Of ancestors never aware of her[00:02:52]

It continues today the soul of a Southerner[00:02:53]

Born of the other America[00:02:56]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:02:58]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:03:06]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:03:13]

She always knew there was somethin wrong[00:03:22]

What you win in the immediate battles is[00:03:31]

Is little compared to the effort you put into it[00:03:34]

But if you see that as a part[00:03:36]

Of this total movement to build a new world[00:03:38]

You know what cathedral you're buildin[00:03:40]

When you put your stone in[00:03:42]

You do have a choice[00:04:02]

You don't have to be a part of the world of the lynchers[00:04:05]

You can join the other America[00:04:10]

There is an other America[00:04:15]
