Washington Talkin’ Blues

Washington Talkin' Blues - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]

Written by:Guthrie[00:00:01]

Long about nineteen twentynine[00:00:09]

I owned a little farm was a doin' just fine[00:00:11]

Raised a little row crop raised some wheat[00:00:15]

Sold it over at the County seat[00:00:17]

Drawed the money[00:00:20]

Raised a family[00:00:22]

Dust came along[00:00:26]

And the price went down[00:00:27]

Didn't have the money when the bank come around[00:00:28]

Tumble weeds and the black dust blowed[00:00:31]

So we hit the trail to where the waters floed[00:00:33]

Way out across yonder somewhere[00:00:37]

Hot old rocks and the desert sand[00:00:41]

Made my mind run back to the dust bowl land[00:00:43]

Hopes was high and we rolled along[00:00:46]

To the Columbia River up in Washington[00:00:48]

Lots of good rain[00:00:51]

Little piece of land[00:00:53]

Feller might grow something[00:00:55]

We settled down on some cut over land[00:00:58]

Pulled up brush and the stumps by hand[00:01:00]

Hot sun burnt up my first crop of wheat[00:01:03]

And the river down the canyon just 500 feet[00:01:05]

Might as we of been 50 miles[00:01:09]

Couldn't get no water[00:01:12]

We loaded our belongings and we lit out for town[00:01:15]

Seen the old vacant houses and farms all around[00:01:16]

Folks a leaving out[00:01:21]

If you're asking me[00:01:22]

That's as lonesome as sight as a feller can see[00:01:23]

Good land[00:01:27]

Grow anything you plant[00:01:30]

Get the moisture[00:01:31]

I struck a lumber town and heard the big saw sing[00:01:35]

And when business is good why lumber's king[00:01:38]

I went to lookin' for a job but the man said no[00:01:42]

So we hit the skids on the old skid row[00:01:44]

Traipsing up and down[00:01:47]

Chasing a bite to eat[00:01:50]

Kids hungry[00:01:53]

Heard about a job so we hit the wheat[00:01:57]

Made about enough for the kids to eat[00:01:59]

Picked in the berries gathered in the fruit[00:02:01]

Hops peaches and the apples too[00:02:03]

Slept in just about everything[00:02:06]

Except a good warm bed[00:02:08]

Been to Arizona been to California too[00:02:14]

Found the people was plenty but the jobs was few[00:02:18]

Well maybe it's just like the feller said[00:02:22]

When they ain't enough arok well business is dead[00:02:25]

Sorta ailin'[00:02:29]

Ain't no money a changin' hands[00:02:32]

Just people changing places[00:02:35]

Folks wastin gasoline a'chasin' around[00:02:39]

Now what we need is a great big dam[00:02:45]

To throw a lot of water out acrost that land[00:02:47]

People could work and the stuff would grow[00:02:51]

And you could wave goodbye to the old Skid Row[00:02:53]

Can't get job[00:02:57]

Work hard[00:02:59]

Raise all kinds of stuff[00:03:01]

Kids too[00:03:05]

Take it easy[00:03:08]
