The Hiring Fair - Fairport Convention[00:00:01]
I went down to the hiring fair for to sell my labour,[00:00:12]
And I noticed a maid in the very next row and I hoped[00:00:18]
She'd be my neighbour.[00:00:22]
Imagine then my delight when the farmer picked us both.[00:00:23]
I spoke not a word in the cart to the farm, but my[00:00:30]
Heart beat in my throat.[00:00:36]
My lodging was dry and my master fair and himI gave [00:00:43]
Full measure,[00:00:47]
But my envy grew like the corn in the field in for his[00:00:49]
House was my treasure,[00:00:53]
And I'd watch her carry water, or drive cows from the[00:00:55]
Byre,[00:00:59]
And the heat from the sun made the corn grow strong and[00:01:01]
With it my desire.[00:01:06]
Well I'd see her in my dreaming and in my dreams caress[00:01:20]
Her eyes, her lips and her dark brown hair, the curves[00:01:26]
Beneath her dress.[00:01:30]
But harvest time it came at last, so heavy was the task[00:01:32]
That the women and the men worked side by side and I[00:01:38]
Had her near at last,[00:01:43]
And I swung harder with my scythe, few words between us[00:01:50]
Passed,[00:02:01]
And I cursed my tongue-tied youthfulness and I hoped[00:02:02]
That she'd hear my heart.[00:02:06]
When all was safely gathered in and we sat down to rest[00:02:09]
My trembling fingers touched her arm, and she placed[00:02:15]
Them on her breast.[00:02:46]
And then she turned to me as the sun went down and all[00:02:47]
My senses reeled,[00:02:50]
As we lay there on the scented ground and the moon rose[00:02:52]
Over the field.[00:02:55]
She was safely gathered in my arms when from the barn[00:04:12]
Drifted the sound of a violin and we hurried back to[00:04:18]
The farm,[00:04:22]
And all were dancing in the lantern light and music[00:04:22]
Filled the air,[00:04:28]
And I thanked my stars for the harvest moon and the[00:04:30]
Girl from the hiring fair.[00:04:35]
