Streets of New York - The Wolfe Tones[00:00:00]
I was eighteen years old[00:00:09]
When I went down to Dublin[00:00:11]
With a fistfull of money[00:00:14]
And a cartload of dreams [00:00:15]
Take your time said my father [00:00:19]
Stop rushing like Hell [00:00:21]
And remember all's not[00:00:23]
What it seems to be [00:00:25]
For there's fellas who'd cut you[00:00:29]
For the coat on your back [00:00:31]
Or that watch that you got from your mother [00:00:33]
So take care my young bucko [00:00:37]
And mind yourself well [00:00:40]
Would you give this wee note to my brother [00:00:42]
At the time Uncle Benjy was a policeman in Brooklyn [00:00:46]
And my father the youngest [00:00:51]
Looked after the farm [00:00:53]
Til a phone call from[00:00:56]
America said "Send the lad over "[00:00:58]
And my old fella said [00:01:01]
"Sure t'wouldn't do any harm [00:01:02]
For I've spent my life working this dirty old ground[00:01:06]
For a few pints of porter[00:01:11]
And the smell of a pound [00:01:13]
Sure maybe there's something[00:01:15]
You'll learn or you'll see [00:01:17]
And you can bring it back home [00:01:19]
Make it easier on me "[00:01:22]
So I landed at Kennedy [00:01:27]
And a big yellow taxi[00:01:29]
Carried me and my bags[00:01:31]
Through the streets and the rain [00:01:34]
Well my poor heart was thumping[00:01:37]
Around with excitement [00:01:39]
And I hardly even heard[00:01:41]
What the driver was saying [00:01:44]
We came in the Shore Parkway[00:01:47]
Through the flatlands in Brooklyn [00:01:49]
To my uncle's apartment on East 53rd [00:01:51]
I was feeling so happy [00:01:56]
I was humming a song [00:01:58]
And I sang "You're as free as a bird "[00:02:00]
Well to shorten the story [00:02:05]
What I found out that day[00:02:07]
Was that Benjy got shot[00:02:09]
Down in an uptown foray [00:02:11]
And while I was flying my wayto New York [00:02:14]
Poor Benjy was lying in a cold city morgue [00:02:19]
Well I called up my old fella [00:02:24]
Told him the news [00:02:27]
I could tell he could hardly[00:02:29]
Stand up in his shoes [00:02:31]
And he wept as he told me[00:02:33]
Go ahead with the plan [00:02:35]
And not to forget be a proud Irish man [00:02:38]
So I went up to Nellie's beside Fordham Road [00:02:45]
And I started to learn about lifting my load [00:02:50]
But the heaviest thing[00:02:55]
That I carried that year[00:02:57]
Was the bittersweet thoughts of[00:03:00]
My hometown so dear [00:03:02]
I went home that December cause my old fella died [00:03:05]
I had to borrow the money[00:03:09]
From a fella on the side [00:03:12]
And all the bright flowers and brass couldn't hide[00:03:14]
The poor wasted face of my father [00:03:18]
I sold off the old far yard for what it was worth [00:03:23]
And into my bag stuck a handful of earth [00:03:27]
Then I boarded a train and I caught me a plane [00:03:32]
And I found myself back in the U S again [00:03:37]
It's been twenty-two years since I set foot in Dublin [00:03:42]
My kids know to use the correct knife and fork [00:03:47]
But I'll never forget the green grass and the rivers [00:03:52]
As I keep law and order in the streets of New York[00:03:57]
