A place called England - June Tabor[00:00:00]
Written by:Holland'[00:00:01]
I rode out on a bright May morning[00:00:14]
Like a hero in a song[00:00:16]
Looking for a place called England[00:00:19]
Trying to find where I belong[00:00:22]
Couldn't find the old flood meadow[00:00:25]
Or the house that I once knew[00:00:28]
No trace of the little river[00:00:31]
Or the garden where I grew[00:00:34]
I saw town and I saw country[00:00:42]
Motorway and sink estate[00:00:45]
Rich man in his rolling acres[00:00:47]
Poor man still outside the gate[00:00:50]
Retail park and burger kingdom[00:00:53]
Prairie field and factory farm[00:00:56]
Run by men who think that England's[00:00:59]
Only a place to park their car[00:01:01]
But as the train pulled from the station[00:01:09]
Through the wastelands of despair[00:01:12]
From the corner of my eye[00:01:15]
A brightness filled the filthy air[00:01:18]
Someone's grown a patch of sunflowers[00:01:21]
Though the soil is sooty black[00:01:24]
Marigolds and a few tomatoes[00:01:27]
Right beside the railway track[00:01:30]
Down behind the terraced houses[00:01:37]
In between the concrete towers[00:01:40]
Compost heaps and scarlet runners[00:01:43]
Secret gardens full of flowers[00:01:46]
Meeta grows the scent of roses[00:01:49]
Right beneath the big jet's path[00:01:52]
Bid a fortune for her garden[00:01:54]
Eileen turns away and laughs[00:01:57]
So rise up George and wake up Arthur[00:02:11]
Time to rouse out from your sleep[00:02:13]
Deck the horse in the sea-green ribbons[00:02:16]
Drag the old sword from the deep[00:02:19]
Hold the line for Dave and Daniel[00:02:22]
As they tunnel through the clay[00:02:25]
While the oak in all its glory[00:02:28]
Soaks up sun for one more day[00:02:30]
And come all you at home with freedom[00:02:38]
Whatever the land that gave you birth[00:02:41]
There's room for you both root and branch[00:02:44]
As long as you love the English earth[00:02:46]
Room for vole and room for orchid[00:02:49]
Room for all to grow and thrive[00:02:52]
Just less room for the fat landowner[00:02:55]
On his arse in his four-wheel drive[00:02:58]
England is not flag or Empire[00:03:15]
It is not money it is not blood[00:03:18]
It's limestone gorge and granite fell[00:03:21]
It's Wealden clay and Severn mud[00:03:23]
It's blackbird singing from the may-tree[00:03:26]
Lark ascending through the scales[00:03:29]
Robin watching from your spade[00:03:32]
And English earth beneath your nails[00:03:34]
So here's two cheers for a place called England[00:03:42]
Badly used but not yet dead[00:03:45]
A Mr. Harding sort of England[00:03:48]
Hanging in there by a thread[00:03:51]
Here's two cheers for the crazy Diggers[00:03:54]
Now their hour shall come around[00:03:56]
We should plant the seed they saved us[00:03:59]
Common wealth and common ground[00:04:02]
Here's two cheers for the crazy Diggers[00:04:15]
Now their hour shall come around[00:04:18]
We should plant the seed they saved us[00:04:21]
Common wealth and common ground[00:04:24]
