Mothers, Daughters, Wives - John Schumann and The Vagabond Crew[00:00:01]
Written by:Judy Small[00:00:02]
The first time it was fathers[00:00:15]
The last time it was sons[00:00:19]
And in between your husbands marched away with drums and guns[00:00:23]
And you never thought to question[00:00:30]
You just went on with your lives[00:00:33]
'Cause all they taught you who to be was mothers daughters wives[00:00:38]
You believed them[00:00:48]
You can only just remember the tears your mothers shed[00:00:52]
As they sat and read their papers through the lists and lists of dead[00:01:00]
And the gold frames held the photographs that your mothers kissed each night[00:01:07]
And the door frames held the shocked and silent strangers from the fight[00:01:15]
And you received them[00:01:26]
It was twenty one years later with children of your own[00:01:30]
The trumpets sounded once again and the soldier boys were gone[00:01:38]
And you drove their trucks and made their guns and tended to their wounds[00:01:45]
And at night you kissed their photographs and prayed for safe returns[00:01:52]
And after it was over you had to learn again[00:02:01]
To be just wives and mothers when you'd done the work of men[00:02:08]
So you worked to help the needy and you never trod on toes[00:02:15]
And the photos on the pianos struck a happy family pose[00:02:22]
So deceiving[00:02:33]
Then your daughters grew to women and your little boys to men[00:02:56]
And you prayed that you were dreaming when the call came up again[00:03:04]
But you proudly smiled and held your tears as they bravely waved goodbye[00:03:11]
And the photos on the mantel pieces always made you cry[00:03:19]
And now you're getting older and in time the photos fade[00:03:27]
And in widowhood you sit back[00:03:34]
You reflect on the parade[00:03:37]
In the passing of your memories as your daughters change their lives[00:03:41]
Seeing more to our existence than just mothers daughters wives[00:03:49]
The first time it was fathers[00:03:59]
The last time it was sons[00:04:02]
And in between your husbands marched away with drums and guns[00:04:06]
And you never thought to question[00:04:13]
You just went on with your lives[00:04:16]
'Cause all they taught you who to be was mothers daughters wives[00:04:21]
You believed them[00:04:33]
You believed them[00:04:41]
You believed them[00:04:48]
